For years, I have led art therapy groups that allowed clients to express their internal struggles with issues like anxiety, depression, PTSD, eating disorders and grief.
If you are a big talker that is great, but if you are not a big talker that is okay too! I am creative in facilitating the client's therapeutic need to express themself in their healing journey. I believe in giving the client tools to navigate what is going on in your life. Tools such as CBT, DBT, mindfulness and psycho-education interventions that will help you learn strategies to reframe distorted thoughts , understand and name emotions and understand how it is linked to unwanted behaviors. I invite you to collaborate with me to find your voice, your truth, freedom and a more peaceful and joyful self.

I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and a Licensed Professional Art Therapist.
Hi, my name is Christy Tackwell and I work with adults, teens and children in my private practice. I would say that I am eclectic and use both traditional and alternative forms of therapy such as Art Therapy . I believe in a good working relationship in order to build trust so that the client is comfortable. The client is accepted for who they are and where they are. I believe in creating a safe and confidential environment so that the person can move at his or her own pace towards their therapy goals. Identifying issues and possible solutions is very important.

I received my Master's Degree in Art Therapy and Counseling at Southwestern College in Santa Fe, NM.
Non-judgment and compassion are central to my professional belief system, as well as my personal one. As a counselor, I focus on creating a safe and trusting environment within the therapy room. I aim to create a space where, if just for an hour, a client can take off their armor and feel truly seen and understood. While I cater my treatment style to each client based on their own specific needs, I tend to incorporate Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Humanistic Therapy, and Art Therapy approaches most often.

ACCEPTING MEDICAID CLIENTS MORNING AND AFTERNOON AVAILABILITY!" I love working with adults who are at that point in their lives where they are changing, questioning everything, trying to figure out how to make sense of it all, and deciding what they want from life. This process is essentially what counseling is. I have a lot of experience in helping people sort through these issues in a healthy way. I want future clients to know that they are not alone and if they feel that they are and need someone to talk to that is what I love to do and I would love to meet them.

Life can be stressful and art therapy can assist in identifying and managing emotions. In addition to tele health art therapy , also provide tele-health talk therapy for tweens, adolescents and adults. I strive to assist my clients with creative expressive experiences to help facilitate personal growth; considering developmental, family structure and social/cultural factors when creating individualized treatment plans. The addition of the art making process helps in building relationships with children and teens who may be resistant to sharing their emotions in a therapeutic setting. Where words fail, art takes over.

When you recognize that your current patterns no longer serve you, telling your story in a safe space can start you on the path back to your true self. Underneath the issues that trouble you; grief, trauma, depression, stress, feeling stuck...there are opportunities for growth and positive change. It's time to reconnect with that still, soft voice inside of you that speaks to the truth of who you are; your best self. My therapeutic approach is adapted to your needs; integrating Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, and Art Therapy . I am also trained in EMDR.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
