I specialize in working with young adults and adults navigating change including relationships, career, parenting and loss.
How do we make space for ourselves without being overwhelmed by guilt or pressure? How can we understand and accept the way in which we show up in the world? How do we work towards change even when it feels scary? And, most importantly, how can we love ourselves while we ask these questions? With kindness and courage we’ll work together to find the answers. Much of my passion as a therapist is in collaborating with you as you work through life transitions, as you discover or rediscover what makes you special and what brings you joy, and as you harness those aspects to help you live your life with intention and balance.

As an experienced leader of parent groups at local schools, I offer parent consultation regarding the concerns of bringing up children.
Often people who come to therapy have been struggling for some time. They may be experiencing concerns about a relationship, suffering from a loss or trauma, feeling overloaded with work or school, or just having a general sense that something is wrong. With psychotherapy, these dilemnas can be understood and overcome.

I am Marie Bruno-Mayel, and I specialize in parent /child relationships.
Imagine your precious little joy growing up to be a teenager that is defiant, disrespectful, and treats you like he/she hates you. Truth be told, there are many parents who experience a breakdown in their relationship with their children. All children enter a stage in life where they want to feel like they have the power to make decisions without the input of adults. They tend to follow their friends and seek out social circles that are not always ideal for parents. What looks like a child heading down the wrong path is often a child who wants to be seen, heard, and understood.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
