I've worked in a variety of settings, administering numerous types of evaluations, from workers comp, to neuropsychological, parental fitness to custody evaluations. In therapy, I listen for core conflictual themes. I then bring these themes to awareness so my patients can step back and reflect on how they behaved in the past, experience both of us in the present, and prepare for their future. kindling dialogue between us will ignite hope and nurture compassion within yourself, between us and with your loved ones.

Coping with depression, anxiety, addiction, or even just life stressors can at times feel overwhelming. It's like you are stuck in a cycle of pain and anguish, and your best efforts to deal with it end up making things worse. Maybe you have reached out to friends and family for help, and have been met with either criticism or well-intentioned, but unhelpful advice. You might have even read a self-help book or two, and struggled to use what you've learned for more than a couple weeks. Sometimes, even the efforts to change seem so difficult that you'll give up, convinced things will never get better. There is a better way.

Over twenty years ago, I founded Men Mentoring Men , a non-profit organization supporting men to live happier lives.
When a personal crisis, life transition, or relationship issue happens, it's wise to seek capable support, professional guidance, and competent counsel. Feel free to contact Dr. Ed Adams for a day or evening appointment if you or someone you know is looking for this kind of experienced professional. I've been in private practice over 25 years. While each day I work with women and couples, I've developed a strong expertise working with men . When a man finds a safe and dignified environment to express himself with someone who understands the male world, he will often begin the process of change and growth.

I am interested in helping people explore and confront self-defeating thoughts and behaviors. My goal is to provide a warm, respectful, and relaxed environment to help you uncover, process, and release the roots of emotional pain, and to create pathways for more joy, resiliency, and meaning in life. As healing unfolds and insights deepen, old patterns make way for a new quality of life - for better relationships with others and with your self. The techniques I use in treatment vary, while my commitment is always geared towards the needs and goals that we establish together in treatment.

I have often had the best success with clients seeking a symptom relief or crisis resolution, in combination with a desire to change lifestyles. Personal growth is more than learning new coping skills, requiring a commitment to self exploration and changing orientations. Breaking old patterns of thought and behavior can be accomplished via changing what we pay attention to,how we treat ourselves and others and broadening our view of the world. I focus on the life directions, passions and strengths of people. I am informed by the belief that we are all unique beings.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
