I have a passion for working with kids and families. I am fascinated with the ways kids communicate and love finding the best ways to connect. I enjoy partnering with kids and families to figure out the best ways to overcome behavioral and emotional difficulties so everyone can grow and flourish. When I work with adults, I partner with them to understand, process, and overcome difficulties and traumas they have experienced so they can productively move forward. My work is influenced by cognitive behavioral and family systems theories, and I utilize EMDR when appropriate.

Life is a journey that can sometimes seem overwhelming with no supports. You feel stuck in patterns or behaviors, wanting new ways to meet life's difficulties. Feelings of powerlessness and vulnerability understandably lead to distress, impacting relationships you have with your partner, children, friends or coworkers. I believe we live in, and are a product of our relationships - not only with others, but with our own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is my belief that to operate authentically in connection to those around us, we must work to strengthen the most integral relationship we hold; the one we have with ourselves.

“I feel stuck.... Nothing is going to get better... I don’t know why I feel this way... Nobody understands what I'm going through.” How many of these thoughts sound familiar? Sometimes, one of the most difficult things to navigate is how we feel. Life is hard. It’s filled with things that are stressful, overwhelming, painful, and heartbreaking. It can be challenging just to get through the day without crying, losing motivation, isolating, or feeling hopeless. It can be a lot to handle. Figuring out how to change that doesn’t have to be.

Hi, I'm Hanna. I have two main convictions as a counselor. The first is that healing begins with being heard. The second is in the resilience of the human spirit. I use these beliefs to guide my work with clients who are struggling with symptoms &/or making the conscious choice to evolve. This is a deeply personal experience & there is no one size fits-all. Every therapeutic relationship & life journey is different, but you can trust that I will meet you wherever you are at, emotionally and mentally. Over time, we will deconstruct life where it's needed so that we can build a future that feels better for your mental health and soul.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists
How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
