I am incredibly fortunate to be the son of Professor Arnold Lazarus. Not only did I literally learn at the feet of the man who pioneered cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT), but from his amazing colleagues and friends as well. Indeed, I have been privileged to get to know and learn from Carl Rogers, Albert Ellis, Aaron Beck, Francine Shapiro, and Marsha Linehan, to name only a few. Hence, I have been able to synthesize the teachings of many of the greatest minds in psychology into an approach that is at once scientifically grounded, tailored to fit the needs of unique individuals, highly flexible, and comprehensive.

Intergenerational family dysfunction is not inevitable. I work with adults and children to untangle relational and behavioral patterns that are often foundational to the presenting problem. I take an integrative, strength-based approach and help the client identify perceptions and attributions that may be interfering with optimal self development and fulfilling relationships. For adults and children, this therapeutic approach is helpful in changing dysfunctional relational dynamics to those that promote growth and well-being.

Building genuine therapeutic relationships is the foundation of my work. I believe that when people have a sense of emotional safety there is a natural opening for healing, growth, discovery, and transformation. My goal is to provide a safe and non judgmental environment where people will feel safe enough to express their vulnerabilities, allow themselves to connect to their emotions, and tap into their innate inner strengths to be successful and meet their goals. My approach to therapy is psychodynamic which gives individuals the freedom to self reflect and help them identify patterns that contribute to unique challenges they face.

I believe that Balance is an important components of life. Not unlike the human body, our mind strives for equilibrium, also known as Balance. I also believe that when one works to seek and achieve Clarity, he or she will find peace and comfort. I interpret Clarity as the continual state of obtaining information and knowledge, communicating, as well as validating information and feelings received from people around us. I believe that Mindfulness is the key to maintaining continued balance and clarity in life. I interpret mindfulness as being in the "now"; being in the present moment and being available.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
