I specialize in working with teens and adults who are struggling with anxiety, depression , grief and trauma.
I am a licensed clinical psychotherapist who earned my Master’s Degree in Social Work from New York University. After completing my Master’s, I went on to attend a four year post-graduate program at The National Institute of the Psychotherapies, where I was certified in psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy. I believe that with the right psychotherapy, one can face any life challenge head on and develop the insight and the skills to grow from them. I have an empathic approach that allows the space for my patients to look within and do the necessary work to improve their lives.

You are dissatisfied with your life, particularly in your relationships or your search for a partner. You may be anxious, losing sleep, and even feeling depressed sometimes. Maybe you keep dating and breaking up with the same people, and you need to break the cycle. Or you may be in a committed, loving relationship, but you feel like your partner is constantly putting you down and making you feel bad about yourself. Perhaps you feel like no matter how hard you try, it's never good enough for the people around you.

I give my clients tools to: manage difficult situations & relationships, make better decisions, manage feelings of anxiety, depression , shame, guilt, anger, grief, or loss, and to learn healthier ways of thinking. I work with single adults regarding dating, finding the right partner and coping with being alone. As children, many of my clients experienced trauma, abuse, abandonment, or had alcoholic parents. As adults, some of my clients have had partners or siblings with addiction. Together we address their codependent issues and raise self esteem. More than anything, I help my clients put their past in the past.

I offer psychotherapy/counseling for issues such as: relationship conflict, divorce, life transitions, depression , anxiety, self- esteem and chronic health issues.
It's not easy to walk into an office and speak to a stranger about your most personal struggles with the hope that they might actually help you. This requires trust that the therapist knows what they are doing and a sense of safety that they actually like and care about you. Therapy is first about building a trusting relationship, and then about using the best available therapeutic approaches to heIp you get relief from pain, stress, and conflicts.

As I moved my practice to Montclair, I began to incorporate a deeper practical understanding of (and focus on) daily suburban angst: anxiety/ depression ; OCD; academic and career struggles; video-game and internet addiction; and parenting challenges.
Whether therapy is something you feel you need, something you want, or something your parents are making you do, understanding your deeper self is never a bad choice. But it can be a challenging one. I honor any person willing or wanting to embark on that adventure, and focus on helping my clients to identify, understand, and explore the aspects of their lives and their selves that feel stuck, painful, or not quite where they want them to be. I firmly believe that depth of understanding, emotional awareness, and rejuvenated coping skills are the foundations of progress, confidence, and success.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
