People often come to a therapist because they want to talk about being anxious, being lonely, feeling depressed, having difficulty in relationships, feeling ill, feeling stressed and burned out, or having a hard time taking care of themselves and others. I aim to help people to reduce symptoms (e.g., anxiety, pain) and, more generally, to engage in personal growth and to foster a more connected, meaningful life by focusing on mind and body wellness. I will work with you to help you cope more effectively; in doing so, I focus on your strengths and potential.

There are times in life when we encounter pressures and difficulties that not only challenge our ability to cope and adapt in healthy and effective ways, but that also leave us feeling out of touch with, and/or out of alignment with our truest, most authentic selves. Our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and well-being can often suffer as a result. As a licensed clinical psychologist that specializes in treating issues related to physical health (e.g., chronic pain, weight loss) and spirituality, I am deeply passionate about providing evidenced-based psychotherapy that respects and honors the whole person.

My name is Christian, and welcome to my practice. Parakaleo is a Koine Greek word that means “to call alongside.” It was a way to describe a counselor – one who walks alongside you to encourage, strength, and comfort. In a digital age when everyone is becoming more connected but alone at the same time, it is hard to discern the competing voices inside your mind and heart. I hope to walk alongside you during this season to help you find that voice inside that you need hear, and unlock its resonance – in your challenges, passions, and relationships.

Are you having trouble ‘getting’ your brain and/or body to cooperate? This is a struggle common if you are living with insomnia, ADHD, or chronic medical conditions. If you have insomnia, chances are you have put forth every effort one can think of toward solving your sleep issues only to find limited success or even escalating symptoms. If you have ADHD, chances are you are really great at challenging or interesting tasks but struggle with the mundane - like laundry or routine paperwork. Wanting so badly to implement the things that are important to you but having them feel out of reach can be painful. But this can change!

I have extensive experience helping those who are managing depression, anxiety, peer/relational problems, family issues, academic difficulties, chronic illness, and more.
As a Licensed Professional Counselor with 15+ years as a child/adolescent therapist, I enjoy working across the developmental lifespan from childhood into emerging adulthood/emerging parenthood. Families typically come to us when they notice their child is struggling in ways that feel hard to manage at home, in school, or socially. This might look like frequent meltdowns, withdrawal, anxiety, difficulty focusing, defiance, or trouble coping with big feelings. Parents often seek support because they want to better understand their child and feel more confident in how to help them thrive.

You're living a life that doesn't follow the expected script, whether that's something you chose, something that chose you, or some complicated mix of both. Maybe you moved abroad, left a stable career, or built a life that's hard to explain at dinner parties. Maybe illness or loss rewrote the plan entirely. From the outside it might look brave. From the inside it can feel like persistent uncertainty and a quiet exhaustion from figuring it out without a map. If you're a thoughtful, perceptive person navigating a life that seems to have gone off-script, you're in the right place.

You feel more in control of your overwhelming intense emotions and handle your chronic illness with more ease.
Is waking up in the morning so painful that you can’t enjoy your cup of coffee? Maybe you cry throughout the day from the smallest triggers and feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. Or maybe you get so bogged down by excessive worry or chronic health concerns that you just can’t sleep anymore. Perhaps you’ve had a recent loss and feel like you’re being swallowed by grief on a daily basis, or maybe your emotions fluctuate so much between extremes that you feel out of control. I know how hopeless it can feel to cope with your day to day and you may just want to curl up in a ball to escape all your pain.

Life gives us so many challenges, from navigating past to current stressors, finding our place in this world. In the therapeutic relationship my goal is to let my belief of the importance of empathy allow my client to feel validated and let their story of their journey be heard with no judgement.

Chronic Illness Therapists
How does therapy for chronic illness work?
Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?
Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?
No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?
There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
