I have worked with individuals and couples in all stages of life and life transitions including separation and divorce, career change, loss, parenting, and addressing
anxiety
and depression that get in the way of truly enjoying life.
After 25 years, I still get excited about working with individuals, couples or families to identify and collaborate on reaching creative solutions that fit the person and his own internal values and goals. I draw from training and experience in cognitive behavior therapy, meditation, and the utilization of a host of resources that empower and bring real behavioral and emotional results in creating a higher quality of life and relationships.

I am both an art therapist and counselor with many years of experience working with individuals challenged with issues such as
anxiety
, low self-esteem and difficulties adjusting to life's changes. I can help you express and explore your core beliefs and concerns in a safe, calming, non-judgmental environment. In addition to traditional verbal therapy, I offer art therapy, mindfulness, and creative writing/journaling. *Art Therapy allows for expression of feelings using materials such as markers, paint, and pastels. It is a non-threatening and more immediate method to voice issues; drawing ability is not important.

I work with adults, older adults, couples, and college students. My areas of expertise include depression,
anxiety
and relationship issues. I'm also interested in women's issues and assertiveness. I tailor therapy to each individual client, rather than taking a "one size fits all" approach. So, with one person, therapy might focus on solving some current problem or crisis, for another it might be learning stress management techniques, and for another it could be working to resolve issues and trauma from earlier in life. Most often, it's a little, or a lot, of all of these things.

My practice offers caring and knowledgeable support. It takes courage to pursue therapy, so I provide a warm and non-judgmental environment in which effective therapy can take place. Areas of specialty include
anxiety
, depression, postpartum depression, grief and loss, life transitions and relationship issues. In my practice I help you to consider and honor your whole self : mind, body emotions and spirit. Different approaches are called for at different times in life. Sometimes you just need extra support and coping strategies to get through a rough time, or sometimes going deeper to gain insight will transform old patterns.

My specialties include working with adolescents and adult that are experiencing one of the following: life transitions that are difficult to cope with, trauma, chronic illness/pain,
anxiety
, depression, existential and stage-of-life issues, and stress that has been difficult to manage on your own.
I believe strongly that we all have the capacity for positive change, no matter where we start out. Therapy should provide a warm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental space in which clients can explore new goals, solutions, and ways of being. I seek to empower clients by fostering greater awareness and understanding of their thoughts, behaviors, environments, and interpersonal patterns. My approach is tailored to each person and their needs, but often incorporates concepts from Cognitive-Behavioral, Interpersonal, and Person-Centered therapies, as well as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction techniques.

Helping these individuals navigate challenges (relationship issues,
anxiety
/depression, and disordered eating) to create successes during these transitional years is the primary focus of my practice.
Study after study indicates that what "works" in therapy is the quality of the relationship between the client and therapist. I create a strong relationship in which my clients feel safe and understood while sharing and exploring their lives.
I conceptualize from a psychodynamic orientation and contour treatment to the specific needs of the individual.

Anxiety Therapists
What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
