Throughout my career, I have specialized in working with individuals, couples, and families dealing complex trauma, PTSD, early childhood and relational trauma,
anger management
, high-conflict relationships, substance abuse,
anger management
, and both DCPP and/or court-involved clients.
Often individuals who have experienced on-going internal or relational conflict feel stuck in a cycle that they can't seem to control no matter how many attempts or strategies they try. In the confusion and exhaustion, they give up and give in to hopelessness, low self-worth, shame,
anger
, and fear. This leads into more alienation, suffering, and despair. Those who want to heal the relationship with themselves and with those they love can rediscover the self that is trapped under all of the pain,
anger
, and fear. With empathic support, knowledge, and adequate resources, healing is possible.

Through a supportive, strengths-based perspective I can help adolescents feel comfortable to address feelings of depression, anxiety, or
anger
, oppositional behaviors, manage stress, destructive behaviors or self-harm and improve parent-child relationships.
The decision to enter counseling is a personal one. Many questions may come with this decision including: • How can counseling help me? • How do I find the right counselor? • What can I expect at a counseling session? • When will I start to feel better? Through supportive listening, compassionate humor, and collaboration, my goal is to help you challenge unhealthy ways of functioning, cope with life stressors, and identify what is going well. Positive recognition is key to feeling good about ourselves and helps inspire wellness and success.

I work with children and young adults with Autism, school-aged children and their families to support navigating times of stress, conflict,
anger
, anxiety and grief.
We all experience hardship. I believe that counseling is a powerful tool to help us navigate our daily journey and grow. In the midst of adversity, we can cultivate strength and reach goals that may seem impossible. I partner with clients to identify their needs and strategies to reach their goals. My role is to help identify and cultivate these strengths through focusing on skills such as communication, emotional regulation, coping, feeling identification and self-advocacy. I believe that each individual has personal strengths and each family system has strengths and resources to meet their needs and reach their goals.

My approach is integrative, dynamic, and relational, working with a range of issues including grief,
anger
, shame, anxiety, depression, parenting challenges, mood and dissociative disorders, addictions and eating disorders.
Therapy can be a richly rewarding process. Most important to its success is first establishing a non-judgmental, collaborative relationship so together we can identify and flexibly address your particular needs. From there our work may include identifying familiar patterned behaviors and learning specific coping and problem solving skills to allow for new ways to relate to yourself, to others, to strengthen your mind, and deepen your emotional resilience. Our work will draw on a combination of treatment modalities including short-term solution-focused practices, mindfulness, and neurobiological understandings.

I work with individuals struggling with emotional distress (depression, anxiety,
anger
), health-related problems (eating disorders, weight loss, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivity, health anxiety, somatization, and psychosomatic conditions) and relationship difficulties.
Over the past 20+ years, I have been working with adults, adolescents, and children in individual, couples, and family therapy. I listen closely to my clients to understand their current problems and related symptoms, thoughts, and feelings. I work collaboratively with clients to investigate the history of their struggles and to create a plan for change. Using cognitive, behavioral, and emotion-focused approaches, I aim to facilitate healing, growth, and change. Having spent much of my career as a scientist-practitioner, my clinical work is informed by empirical findings. My treatment approach is reasoned, compassionate, and practical.

After 28 years working with children, teens and adults who exhibit anxiety, depression, ADHD and
anger
issues, I am clear that true therapeutic change can be accelerated through a combination of traditional talk therapy, cognitive behavioral techniques and brain-based interventions. My utilization of EFT acupressure , Brainspotting and the Havening Techniques have reduced therapy time for the treatment of ADHD, anxiety and have given people TOOLS that they can utilize outside of the therapy office.

First and foremost, I want my clients to feel comfortable in their own skin. My goal is to provide my clients with a safe and supportive space, free of judgment. I'm passionate about my practice and have put my heart and soul into it. I have over 30 years of experience working with individuals and couples struggling with a wide variety of issues. I incorporate these strategies for stress reduction, mood and
anger management
and control of ADHD symptoms.
With 25 years in practice, I treat a broad spectrum of problems across the life span. Utilizing a developmental perspective and extensive training (Psychodynamic, CBT, DBT, Mindfulness and Hypnotherapy), I customize treatment to your needs, in a warm and judgment free atmosphere supportive of personal growth. I am interested in how feelings, thoughts and behaviors intersect, or form patterns that play a role in distress and adaptation. I can help you, your child or family to see how these forces affect your well being and how they can shift to ease tensions and to create new perspectives and changes that allow for more fulfilling experiences.

Although we are all unique and complex, individuals across cultures have an innate tendency to think in unhelpful ways and engage in acts of self-defeat (even despite our best efforts not to). Common self-defeating behaviors that I often help others with include: avoidance/decision paralysis, isolation, procrastination, passive or aggressive communication, substance, sex, or gambling addiction, and self-injury. These self-defeating behaviors are often closely linked to unhealthy negative emotions that you may also be experiencing such as: depression, anxiety,
anger
, guilt, shame, hurt, envy, and jealousy.

How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.
How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.
Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.
What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
