Life can be pretty hard sometimes. Often clients come to me after suffering for a long time, looking for answers for why they feel this way and to find out how they can feel better. I work with first responders who take on the stress of it all for others, but they often struggle to provide care to themselves. As a former EMT myself, I know what the stress of the job entails, and I know it can be hard to talk about it with someone on the outside. Therapy can be a space to unload the backpack and get the support you need to start running on all cylinders again.

Hi! I’m Meg and I am glad you're here. Looking for a therapist takes courage; I want to acknowledge the very challenging steps that you are taking to find support either for yourself or for a loved one. As a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) I view our mental wellbeing as a culmination of factors ranging from our genetics to our daily stressors which can sometimes make us feel like our world is crashing down all at once or that things are happening as a trickle with no rhyme or reason. Navigating our inner world simultaneously with the external world can be overwhelming.

Sometimes parenting can feel overwhelming, especially when your child struggles with emotions, behavior, or developmental concerns. You want to support them but may feel unsure how. They may have experienced trauma, have very big emotions, or have difficulty with transitions. Perhaps your child has challenges related to ADHD or ASD, and you are seeking a neurodiversity-affirming approach. You need a therapist who understands their unique needs. Maybe you are a parent or guardian seeking to improve your own emotional regulation skills and want to move away from “fear-based” parenting but need guidance. I can help.

I'm a secular therapist with acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and existential therapy backgrounds; but your therapy depends on you.
My style is relaxed and informal. We'll look at how you think and the things you do, learn about the way your brain works, handle stress, do self-care and self-love, and accept what can't be changed. We can also process the past, set goals for the future, and explore your personal philosophies.

There are two major factors with making therapy beneficial - one is the you, the client, and by looking for a therapist, you're taking a big step! The second is the therapeutic relationship, which is strengthened over time. By allowing me to sit with you, help you process what's happening in your life, and trying different coping strategies, we're strengthening that therapeutic relationship, which makes therapy effective. I'm open to feedback and new ideas to find something that's effective for you.

I consider myself experienced in working with people with anxiety, depression, trauma, and members of kink and poly/LGBTQIA+ communities in both NJ and PA. I have eclectic experience as a therapist having worked with folks ages 12 and up on concerns including relationships, intimate partner violence, self-esteem, and anxiety. Though I enjoy working with most populations, my passion lies with helping survivors of emotional/narcissistic abuse and sexual trauma rediscover their identities and learn to trust themselves as their own greatest ally. I also hope to help survivors develop a more positive view of sex and sexuality.

I specialize in working with folks who are neurodivergent, neurospicy, "on the spectrum", and/or autistic (or who are curious if this applies to them), I offer a safe neuro-affirming space to process their experiences, be heard and understood, brainstorm accommodation options, and grow in self love and acceptance. Being neurodivergent in a neurotypical world can be incredibly draining often leading to burnout with no societal accommodations to recover from that burnout. One might be left feeling less than, othered, like a failure, or broken somehow and don't know why.

Secular and Non-Religious Therapists
What is a secular and non religious approach in therapy?
Secular or non-religious therapy is a theoretical orientation used by many therapists and describes a therapeutic approach that does not rely on any specific religious or faith-based beliefs in the therapeutic process. Secular counselors will often approach therapy with an emphasis on evidence-based practices, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients, instead of relying on religious practices, such as prayer or belief in God.

Is secular therapy primarily for non-religious people?
Both religious and non-religious individuals can benefit from secular therapy. People exploring their religious or spiritual beliefs may find it especially useful to work with a secular therapist who is unbiased toward any specific religion. While religious individuals might value the connection and familiarity of seeing a counselor who shares their beliefs, secular counseling can offer them the chance to develop coping skills independent of their religious practice, which can be beneficial in various aspects of their lives.

Can a secular approach to therapy help with religious trauma?
One major reason clients may seek a secular therapist is to process previous religious experiences, including religious trauma. Secular therapists can help clients manage symptoms of the trauma through practices such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). They can also encourage clients through talk therapy or psychodynamic approaches to explore the roots of their religious trauma. Since secular therapists do not have any predetermined religious beliefs, they can be particularly helpful for clients looking to explore their own religious beliefs following a history of religious trauma.

What does non religious marriage and premarital counseling involve?
Marriage and premarital counseling typically involves a couple meeting with a therapist to discuss topics such as planning for marriage, navigating a new marriage, addressing relationship challenges, and developing better communication and conflict resolution skills. Non-religious therapists assist couples in achieving these goals without adhering to specific religious beliefs or frameworks, often emphasizing inclusivity and non-judgment, especially for "nontraditional" couples. However, seeking couples therapy from a non-religious counselor does not mean religious topics are off-limits. In fact, non-religious couples from different religious backgrounds may benefit from a secular therapist who remains neutral toward the beliefs of each partner.
