Often times we seek therapy because of struggles in relationships, adjusting to a new phase in life, uncertainty about the future, family stress, anxiety, & depression . You don't need to wait until you are in crisis to get help. Learning the balance between self-care & community care is a practice. Together we can explore different tools that can support you to work through emotions & patterns that may have happened in the past, but are playing a part in your desire to grow now. We don't choose what happens to us, but it is part of our journey to work through them. Our work together is to increase your choices and awareness.

After some thorough reconsideration of the current socio-cultural landscape, I have decided to focus my efforts on those disillusioned, displaced, and depressed young adults who struggle with three attributes that are necessary (if not imperative) to live a fulfilling life: Self-reliance, Self-sufficiency, and Self-governance. I believe that the facilitation of these realistic, accountable, and disciplined attributes will only create a much more valuable and enlightening existence.

I am certain that people have within them the capacity to grow, change and find a better balance in their lives. In my sessions, I provide clients with practical tools and coping skills to apply to everyday situations. I was intensively trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy in 2010 by Behavioral Tech, LLC and use DBT as a basis for therapy. We examine how negative self-talk perpetuates the cycle of depression and anxiety and set about to replace it with positive thought processes. We explore ways to restore connections and communication in your relationships, rediscover self-care and build a life worth living.

When working with immediate areas of concern for clients, I use techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to help clients develop problem-solving skills, determine personal goals and reduce stress and anxiety. For clients addressing unresolved difficult past experiences, I use psychodynamic Attachment Theory. I have a particular interest in helping adolescents develop insights and skills to create a personally meaningful life. I have experience working with clients with anxiety, depression , academic stress, and relationship difficulties.

My specialties include anxiety, trauma, depression , and social skills.
Finding a therapist for you or your child can be a difficult task. Purposeful Pathways hopes to help with that. Personally, much of my experience is centered around working with adolescents in multiple levels of care settings (e.g., outpatient to partial hospitalization) with things like mood disorders, self-esteem issues, interpersonal effectiveness needs, and parent-child relational issues to name a few of areas I have helped clients navigate. With my young adult-adult clients, much of what I have seen is a need for support through transitions, assessing and increasing life satisfaction, and overall short/long term goal setting.

Feeling stuck or out of control? Stressed out or totally overwhelmed? You may be a good match! My ideal client is an adolescent through an older adult navigating depression , anxiety, or life transitions. You might (but don't have to) be defining your LGBTQ+ identity, exploring nonmonogamy, or considering your relationship with sex. All I ask is that you are open to exploring your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a nonjudgmental space. Together, we’ll discover what in life helps you feel your best, and I’ll challenge you to commit to actions that align with your values. If this sounds like you, get in touch.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
