With children I use play therapy, including sand therapy, and art therapy.
I elicit hope when the world seems hopeless. My approach is to develop a therapeutic relationship where authenticity is encouraged in a compassionate, judgement free space. Majority of the children I work with simply want to just be kids, but there is a concern or barrier that needs to be addressed or removed first. Majority of the youth I work with are trying to figure out their purpose and how to focus on the future. The families I work with want to reduce stress and be cohesive. The couples I work with want to be unified and feel like they are together in their relationship. The adults want to be happy and content.

I believe knowledge is power, and through the use of psychoeducation, talk therapy and art therapy we can work together to find solutions that align with your values.
If you have often felt like you are just going through the motions of life, not finding joy in things you once did, finding yourself reacting to the world in ways that feel difficult to control, or just can’t tolerate stress any longer, there is alternative path you can take. Once we are able to discuss the biggest obstacles in your way, we will deep dive into psychoeducation, skill use & processing to help you understand your experiences, recognize you are NOT broken, and that there is a path to healing available to you should you so choose.

You DON’T have to be a skilled artist to benefit from art therapy: you just have to be open to exploring life’s challenges through the creative process.
As a certified perinatal mental health professional, I know that birthing parents and their partners face a myriad of challenges during pregnancy and the postpartum period, including depression, anxiety, obsessive symptoms, traumatic stress, and perinatal psychosis. Don’t let societal expectations or shame prevent you from seeking the support you need!

I have always liked the metaphor that therapy is like riding in the car with someone. You are the one behind the wheel, deciding where and how fast we go and I am the one with the map helping you to get there. I believe in forming collaborative relationships with the people I work with. I strive to help you understand yourself better so that you can make meaningful change in your life. My goal is to help you form strategies and ways of thinking that can be translated from the therapy room to every day life - to work, school. relationships, and within yourself.

Art Therapy
How does art therapy work?
The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?
Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?
The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?
Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
