I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, stress, and
insomnia
- it is common for them to overlap.
You’re lying in bed and it starts - endless thoughts of what there is to do and what hasn’t been done, what is going wrong or what could go wrong, memories you’re trying not to recall, thoughts of how to ‘fix’ your
sleep
/anxiety/mood/life, etc. It’s exhausting yet that is exactly the problem; you just can’t seem to disengage enough to fully relax, enjoy, or possibly even
sleep
. The more you do try to push it away it can seem like the worse it gets or the more limited your life becomes. This is a frustrating paradox particularly for people who want the best for themselves and their lives.

Therapy is a special place to explore who you truly are and what makes you happy. If you are not feeling fulfilled, it is time to do something about that! Life is short and the capacity to look at how you deal with situations can require a special kind of honesty in order to make a real change. I would love the opportunity to work with you to help you make these important changes.

If you would like to resolve longstanding feelings of depression and anxiety, feelings of loss, the symptoms of trauma, or a tendency to repeat the same problems in relationships, you may have found that time-limited, symptom-focused therapy hasn't relieved your suffering. Perhaps it has even discouraged you from thinking you can find a lasting solution to your problems. You may feel hopeless about being able to stop what seems like a repeating series of crises, feeling resigned to suffer or cope with difficulty.

Welcome! I commend you for taking the first step in your self-care. I hope our work together will help you heal the sadness, anxiety or relationship difficulties that you may be experiencing. The negative thoughts and emotions that sometimes come to your mind taint the view of yourself, others, and the world around you. The pain they cause can be difficult to endure, as they filter your perception of the past, the present, and the future, bringing about unnecessary emotional pain and suffering.

Most people today find themselves with many commitments, obligations, and goals they are working towards. It can feel like an unattainable task to manage all the pieces that make up our worlds. This is true for adults and youth. I often ask, where are we on our "to-do" lists? How can we work towards prioritizing our well-being to lead more balanced lives? As a therapist, I believe it is my role to partner with clients and assist them in attaining their goals. I have many years of experience working with youth, their families and also individually with adults managing anxiety, depression, or processing trauma, with an empathetic ear.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.
Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.
Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.
What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
