I primarily employ a strengths-based,
psychodynamic
approach, but often weave in CBT, MI, mindfulness, EMDR and other tools, catered to an individual's needs.
When things aren't going well and don't seem to be getting better, when you feel alone and disconnected, stressed, not good enough, angry or ashamed, resentful, or have been deeply hurt, you naturally try to ease that discomfort, but not always in the most helpful ways. Often, problematic thought patterns and behaviors arise from natural coping mechanisms that helped you get through difficult times, but are no longer helpful and are in fact now causing greater harm. Navigating all of this can be hard and at times, overwhelming.

We are all challenged, at times, by our thoughts, feelings, actions, or life situations. I believe we each have the capacity to be resilient. I use active listening and responding to give you a sense of safety and support, so you can become aware of your needs, goals, and values. I have a
psychodynamic
approach and have experience with CBT and DBT.
Are life’s stressors impacting your sense of well-being, your family life or other relationships? Anxiety and depression can immobilize us, leaving us feeling a loss of control and sometimes we just can't make things better on our own. Together we can identify which obstacles are preventing you from achieving your personal goals and then determine how to help you overcome those obstacles. By understanding our past and how we have come to our current situations, we can better prepare and take charge of our lives. Understanding and accepting ourselves is the pathway to freedom and happiness.

I utilize multiple techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT),
psychodynamic
therapy, and motivational interviewing, coupled with old-fashioned talking.
People contact me for many reasons. Often, though not always, the impetus seems to fall into one of two categories. Either something has happened to a person that has significantly changed their world, or nothing has happened and they are feeling stuck. Either scenario can leave someone feeling lost, confused, disconnected, and alone. Frequently I'm contacted after the loss of a loved one, including loss from suicide, or when someone is experiencing difficulty with life transitions (e.g., adjustment to college, career, change in family or caretaking role, or retirement). Other times, it's not that specific. It just helps to talk.

My lifelong caring about helping others and my many early years of
psychodynamic
/psychoanalytic training has evolved to include learning many other important modalities and techniques relevant to the growth of our profession such as EFT(tapping), Trauma/PTSD, CBT, brain chemistry/medication/natural remedies, mind/body work, guided imagery and meditation.
I believe that my working for over 35 years with so many different people has helped me to continuously evolve into a more fluid therapist/healer. I use my mind, heart, and intuition to guide me toward helping to decrease the distress in those seeking my help. My work with people includes encouraging them to find and use their own inner strengths and resources as I help them to heal and become their healthiest selves. I continue to learn the most effective ways to help those w trauma, grief , gender dysphoria, etc as I work closely with them to create a therapeutic environment that fosters growth, safety, patience and mutual trust.

My theoretical orientation is integrative, with particular emphasis on humanistic,
psychodynamic
and cognitive behavioral approaches.
Most people enter therapy looking to change some aspect of their lives. Some people know exactly how they want their lives to be different and simply need help developing skills to achieve their goals. Other people may need to spend more time determining exactly what type of change they need.

I practice
psychodynamic
psychotherapy.
The therapeutic relationship is a very special one. I possess a Masters Degree in Clinical Social Work from Columbia University and have extensive clinical background in private practice, schools, in-patient and out-patient settings. However, it is my love of the work and the respect I hold for my clients that make the relationships a success. With all of the pain life's journey can bring, I try and provide a safe and warm environment for us to make progress. I have studied abroad as well in Ghana, West Africa and Costa Rica to gain more cultural perspectives.

You can help yourself become healthier and happier. As an experienced psychologist, I enjoy working collaboratively with adults and couples to achieve this goal. I value these clients as individuals and approach them in a caring, nonjudgmental way. Although my training has provided me with a wide variety of tools, my experience has taught me which tools are most likely to help in any given situation. Some approaches I use are:
psychodynamic
, cognitive-behavioral, behavioral, and interpersonal. In addition, I believe in educating clients about the therapy process so that they can be a partner in their own treatment.

My approach is Eclectic and I draw most frequently from cognitive/behavioral,
psychodynamic
, humanistic and a problem solving framework keeping in mind the person's capacity for self determination.
We all can reach points in our life where we become stuck and can struggle to manage thoughts, emotions and or relationships. These times can last for months or even years. Frequently we address these problems at least initially through our own means of self help. If these measures fail to unlock ourselves we can turn to psychotherapy as a process that can guide us to a different way of understanding and coping. Psychotherapy can assist in helping to understand and remove our self-imposed barriers.

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
