I offer individual and family counseling, as well as bereavement groups because you shouldn't have to suffer in solitude.
When you lose a loved one, it feels like you've lost everything. The world as you once knew it has completely changed, and while everyone else is going about their daily lives, you don't see the point of anything anymore. Even in a room filled with people, you've never felt more alone than you do now. People don't know what to say so they're left with, "I'm sorry for your loss ," which is meaningless to you. No one understands the depth of your grief , and you wonder if you'll feel this way forever.

People contact me for many reasons. Often, though not always, the impetus seems to fall into one of two categories. Either something has happened to a person that has significantly changed their world, or nothing has happened and they are feeling stuck. Either scenario can leave someone feeling lost, confused, disconnected, and alone. Frequently I'm contacted after the loss of a loved one, including loss from suicide, or when someone is experiencing difficulty with life transitions (e.g., adjustment to college, career, change in family or caretaking role, or retirement). Other times, it's not that specific. It just helps to talk.

Psychotherapy begins in many places -- a life crisis, the loss of a loved one, an unnamed void in life, conflict in a marriage -- and becomes a journey toward healing and meaning.
I have practiced psychotherapy with individuals, couples and families since 1985. My practice consists of a rich diversity of people from all walks of life, with whom I seek to provide a supportive relationship for change and growth. It is my privilege to be in a "people-helping" profession and to see the resourcefulness of the human spirit in working through the complexity of life and becoming whole.

As a Medicare provider with more than 20 years of hospice experience, I will offer you a warm and non judgmental environment where you can bring your feelings of sadness, loss and other powerful feelings that may accompany the grief journey. Everyone’s experience is unique, yet some qualities are universal. Throughout it all, it is important to know that what you are feeling and experiencing is a normal part of your grief process. Together we can navigate the overwhelming, sometimes dark emotional landscape of grief , and learn to find the light that still exists, but can be so hard to see at this very difficult time.

Death , bereavement , grief and loss can be really hard.
The death of a loved one can be overwhelming, isolating and complex regardless if you were close or had a complicated relationship. The loop of the same thoughts, what-ifs, if-only’s running like a tape player in the mind is so painful. Feelings of longing, guilt, or powerlessness can make inner peace or enjoying life feel totally out of reach. And the worry of being a downer or a drag on family or friends prevents you from being authentic and honest with the people closest to you. Some of the biggest challenges can be ruminating on the past, feeling depressed, angry, hopeless or wishing you could’ve done more.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
