Facing life's challenges takes courage and there is always a path toward change, but sometimes we need support along the way. Counseling can help develop insight and healthier ways of coping, as well as, increase self-fulfillment. I work with clients to better understand their emotions, change unhealthy behavior patterns and work through family and relationship conflict. Learning to cope with anxiety and depression, processing grief or trauma and recovering from substance abuse are common problems I work on with clients. Together, we can navigate what often seems overwhelming when faced alone.

Your anxiety and depression or other psychological problems are treated in the context of an empathic and personal therapeutic relationship. These disorders present differently at different life stages and need age/stage related attention. People contact me for many reasons. Often, though not always, the impetus seems to fall into one of two categories. Either something has happened to a person that has significantly changed their world, or nothing has happened and they are feeling stuck. Either scenario can leave someone feeling lost, confused, disconnected, and alone. Frequently I'm contacted after the loss of a loved one, including loss from suicide, or when someone is experiencing difficulty with life transitions (e.g., adjustment to college, career, change in family or caretaking role, or retirement). Other times, it's not that specific. It just helps to talk.

I practice from a cognitive- behavioral, family systems perspective which means the focus of treatment is the goal directed acquisition of social and emotional skills.
My focus is on the treatment of children, adolescents and families. Children often present with behavior and learning challenges, anxiety, depression, stress and technology obsessions. Parents play a significant role in developing goals and strategies. I also focus on the adolescent years and work frequently with school stress, social challenges, anxiety, depression, technology inundations and athletic performance. Overarching is the culture and dynamic of the families in which children and adolescents live. The goal is to feel better about our self, interact better with those in our life and develop skills to manage.

As the author of nine non-fiction books on family relationships, true crime and health, who spent many years in the media arena, I understand how the pressures of coping with a constantly shifting world can drive one to wonder if peace and harmony is even possible.
Life is hard and trauma of all kinds can wear down the strongest of us! But it is the strong who actually ask for help to deal with the challenges that life today throws at us. As a Cognitive-Behavioral therapist who practices from the Strengths Perspective, I work with my clients to identify those thoughts, behaviors and situations that might be holding them back, and implement a plan that will meet their goals. My goal is not to keep anyone in therapy for the rest of their lives, but rather to utilize therapy to overcome their challenges and achieve the inner peace they deserve.

In my years of helping others, I provided a safe place to discuss many topics, including: stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and family conflict.
It's not easy to begin speaking to a complete stranger about your personal concerns and struggles. I believe that therapy is first about creating a genuine and trusting relationship and then working toward goals that will help resolve the issues that may bring someone to counseling. I am solution-focused, strengths-based, and person-centered, tailoring my approach to individual clients' preferences and needs.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
