I use an integrated approach to psychotherapy, grounded in Person Centered (Rogerian) Therapy and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, but drawing on different disciplines such as DBT ( Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) and IFS (Integrated Family Systems) when appropriate.
I am dually licensed as an LPC and LCADC. The path I took to become a therapist was a long and winding one which provided me with a rich diversity of experience to draw from in my work. I received a degree in Creative Writing from the University of Montana in Missoula, where I also began my study of Zen, and eventually spent over 20 years as an Information Technology professional. I have been married for nearly 30 years and, together with my wife, have raised two sons who are now young adults.

I have a psychodynamic approach and have experience with CBT and DBT .
Are life’s stressors impacting your sense of well-being, your family life or other relationships? Anxiety and depression can immobilize us, leaving us feeling a loss of control and sometimes we just can't make things better on our own. Together we can identify which obstacles are preventing you from achieving your personal goals and then determine how to help you overcome those obstacles. By understanding our past and how we have come to our current situations, we can better prepare and take charge of our lives. Understanding and accepting ourselves is the pathway to freedom and happiness.

The client might be processing loss or grief from a loved one or past friendships and or relationships. My ideal client will have needs such as needing to identify coping skills to get through life stressors, assistance with reaching goals. In the last three years I received special training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy ( DBT .
People usually come to me wanting and needing change relatively quickly for their issues related to drugs and alcohol, eating, or as concerned family members. People often feel some shame, or a lot of it, around their problems. I have had success in orienting people to these problems and motivating them to find their way to hope, happiness, and a "recovered" life. Raising a person's true self-confidence is usually a part of the treatment. No two people are exactly alike so I adapt to the counseling needs of my clients. These are treatable issues, so seek help!

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is a form of CBT which incorporates concepts of dialectical strategies, validation, and acceptance while working with clients to effect change and improve daily functioning.
Providing CBT & DBT via teletherapy. Perception is everything. How we perceive something will directly impact our emotional and behavioral responses. Learning to understand the process of perception will offer ongoing opportunities for an individual to enact change in his or her life. I offer specialized treatment for college students and young professionals during their transition into college or the workforce. In my practice I draw from my intensive training in both CBT and DBT to teach these fundamental coping skills to clients. Clients have the option to attend treatment in my office or via videoconferencing.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

DBT is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
