The decision to begin therapy usually comes at times of stress and change in one's life. I provide a supportive, non-judgmental, therapeutic relationship that honors the courage to ask for help and supports change in the face of challenge. Together, we identify issues you want to work on, recognizing your uniqueness and building on your strengths, to help you come to the solutions that work for you. I have worked with clients with a variety of problems including depression, anxiety, difficulties in relationships,
substance
abuse, grief and loss. I work with adults, couples and families.

Life with depression, anxiety,
substance
use, transitions and grief can be challenging.
The words heard are often "Why are they trying to control me. Everyone is doing that. Most people don't care. I don't care. Everyone has dysfunctional families. Is my partner causing my stress and driving me away ? Is anxiety just part of life? Could it just be me and my partner?" Are these your thoughts? Do these words circle in your mind? Are you stuck in this loop that keep's repeating? Do you feel stuck, frustrated and resentful? Does change seem out of your grasp? Is change something you might think about? Is change something that happens for everyone else so you just don't think about it? Think about it today.

If you're looking for
substance
abuse counseling, you may be frustrated to find that most services involve large groups filled with unmotivated and court-mandated clients, large time commitments, forced self-help participation, or clients with much more severe problems. Ayre Counseling offers world-class, innovative treatment that is the platinum standard in the treatment industry. I utilize a flexible, adaptive, and highly individualized approach. Rather than the traditional approaches of heavy confrontation and coercion, I provide the opportunity to change through the use of Evidenced-Based Practices that are delivered in an atmosphere of encouragement, optimism, and compassion.

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson. This is my favorite quote and what I try to reinforce when working with my clients. I believe therapy is a healing journey that consists of gaining awareness, insight, and growth. I work with my clients on identifying and setting concrete goals in order to move beyond their obstacles. I concentrate on helping my clients overcome negative thinking patterns while building self-esteem as they navigate life’s challenges.

Does it seem like no matter how hard you try, you still aren't able to make concrete change in your life? Do you struggle to heal from the past, or a current crisis you need support with? Here are things clients said about working with me: "The number one quality you bring to your practice is kindness...your respect for me has allowed me the space to find respect for myself." "I have gained some real understanding of myself, my own struggles and patterns...this has helped me to let go of behaviors and thoughts that don't work..."

I also believe that when we’re in the throes of depression, anxiety,
substance
use, or some other condition, we get taken away from the realization of our true self.
In a first meeting with a client, one of the most important parts of the session is to understand not only what brings a person into the office, “the problem” so to speak, but also to build out a framework of what the client believes will be the solution. What will it look like when things are better? Rather than pathologizing, I prefer to focus within the wellness model of counseling, identifying strengths and resources available to contribute toward a person’s personal counseling goals.

Welcome to Willow Tree Counseling Associates. My husband, Charlie Berman, and I provide Prevention, Treatment and Wellness Services for youth, adults and senior citizens. To learn more about what we offer, please go to our website: www.willowtree.org. Personally, I am a Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS), a Clinical Supervisor (CCS), a Positive Psycology Practitioner & a Licensed Clinical Alcohol & Drug Counselor (LCADC) with over 35 years of experience working with adolescents, adults, couples, families, schools and community groups. Early in my career, my mentor was Dr. Janet Gerringer Woititz, the author of the New York Times best seller, "Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOAs)". She gave me a great introduction into the
addiction
field and I will be forever grateful. Additionally, Charlie and I facilitate Family Interventions, a highly effective and intensive process to help family members, friends and employers to motivate those they care about - those in denial of their addictions - to seek treatment. We are proud of our 95% success rate. Finally, it's important to note that we offer individualized treatment services because we know that "cookie cutter" methods rarely work and "One size fits all" is simply not true - not in clothing and not in treatment.

Trauma experienced in childhood influences our beliefs and behaviors, causing emotional distress, mental health challenges, and difficulty in intimate relationships. Mindfulness and somatic healing methods can help release emotions trapped in the body and help individuals better manage their emotional states while fostering greater self-compassion and a healthier connection with Self and others.

What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.
How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.
How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.
How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason, “interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
