We are collectively experiencing
trauma
due to events like the pandemic, climate change, violence in our communities, and political strife.
Trauma
therapy techniques can help us explore how direct or indirect challenges are impacting our lives. Together, with kindness and compassion, we will gain a deep understanding of your life experience and identify, augment, and employ your strengths to the fullest. Individual growth and stability are possible when we are willing to look at all aspects of ourselves and apply that learning and understanding when navigating our lives in the chaotic world we live in.

I have had the privilege of working with children, adolescents, and adults on a wide variety of issues, including depression, anxiety,
PTSD
, and grief, in both individual and family therapy.
Life brings change and challenges, sometimes without warning or without our permission. Understandably, these periods can be stressful and frustrating for us and for our families. We do our best to respond to the curveballs that life throws at us in order to move forward. Sometimes, we find that we are not able to push forward as well as we'd like to. You are not alone-- and asking for support is okay. Although we can't stop change from affecting our lives, connecting with a trusted professional to share our story is the first step to regaining control and to letting go of some of that weight on our shoulders.

Inevitably we all encounter profound disappointments and
trauma
in our life-time. The resulting pain which lingers, may cause physical or emotional symptoms such as confusion, excessive anger, fear, anxiety, and/or depression. Such symptoms make achieving one's life's goals difficult. The goal of psychotherapy is to relieve these debilitating symptoms.
Working with adult individuals, I create an environment that facilitates an honest and open exchange between patient and therapist. My goal is to identify the source of symptoms and to increase my patient's quality of life by restoring a sense of balance of body and mind.

Worries can interfere with your enjoyment of the present, allowing "what ifs" to distract and agitate. While anxiety is a universal emotional state that everyone experiences from time to time, many of us find that we can't shut it off, preventing us from being fully engaged in life, school, and work. I can help. Together, we can identify ways to quiet the body and mind, restoring balance and well-being. I have extensive experience in treating
trauma
and anxiety disorders, as well as depression and other mood challenges. Identifying and modifying dysfunctional thought patterns and behaviors can result in significant emotional improvement.

I am a licensed psychologist specializing in the treatment of adults suffering from anxiety, depression,
post-traumatic stress
disorder, & substance abuse difficulties. I work from an evidence-based framework with emphasis on mindfulness practice, acceptance of difficult internal experiences, and valued-based living to increase quality of life. This approach to treatment is known as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT proposes that painful human experiences and life's struggles are all inevitable, and teaches how to learn acceptance of inevitable human difficulties and continuing to live a rich and meaningful life.

Clients come to me for relief of symptoms of anxiety and depression, and to learn to process how
trauma
or complex
trauma
may be impacting their lives today and how to move forward from it. They also seek to gain insight into why they do what they do, to improve their agency or control over their own lives, to learn how to recognize and deal with feelings, to build their self-esteem and to find more pleasure and serenity in their lives. As we work towards the goals clients become ready and willing to make the real behavioral changes that will make a positive difference in their lives.

My treatment is influenced by my training in relational therapy, attachment theory, and
trauma
intervention therapies.
We decide to seek out a therapist for a myriad of reasons. Many of us suffer with social anxiety, chronic low self-esteem or a persistent sense of sadness or loneliness. Many also suffer from recurring
trauma
related experiences, leading to sleeping or eating disturbances, substance abuse, and panic. These persistent, intractable feelings often make it difficult to function optimally in our daily lives. They interfere with our ability to develop and sustain fulfilling relationships and prevent us from achieving our dreams and goals.

I specialize in working with individuals coping with
trauma
, sensitive sexual issues, and challenges faced by LGBTQ individuals.
My work is dedicated to helping you embrace who you are in order to live a fulfilling and balanced life. I focus on developing your ability to understand the powerful connection between your mind and body. This insight facilitates a path toward healing from current and past challenges. During the course of our work, I will help you develop your "Emotional Intelligence" (understanding of what motivates feelings and actions) and acquire the tools needed to overcome barriers blocking growth and change. Once you gain these coping skills, you will find yourself open to loving relationships, living in the present and creating a more fulfilling life.

Do you ever feel like you “should” have everything sorted and things “should” be moving along as planned, but for some reason they are not? Do you feel stuck, like you’re not in control of your own story? Are you ready to be more present, to find and cultivate greater levels of joy, peace and balance in a world that seems to be full of uncertainty. Together, I believe we can reach past our old habits and expand our ways of being and experiencing life with courage and grace.

My favorite author, Cleo Wade, once wrote, “There is no mountain that cannot be climbed and there are more pathways to the top than we could ever imagine.” At times, it can feel like the mountain(s) in front of us are insurmountable. These mountains could include grief reactions,
trauma
, relationship problems, newfound or old insecurities that won’t go away, job or financial insecurities, family difficulties, and many more. I believe that therapy exists to help you find alternative pathways to the top of the mountain you are facing.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
