Is the weight of being the strong one in your family becoming difficult to manage? To the world, everything looks perfect. But on the inside, everything is not okay. You have checked off all the proverbial boxes of success in life, but you still feel a vast emptiness. It’s hard for you to enjoy your success, feel joy because stress and anxiety keep you up at night. I work with adults to help develop a deeper understanding of how past unresolved family dynamics may play a role in the current struggles you are facing in all of your relationships.

It is difficult to share your challenges and struggles because there is a lack of emotional support from friends, family , and significant others. When there is an opportunity to share your struggles, it feels as if you are judged or misunderstood. In most situations, all we need is support, regardless of the decisions we make, and a third party to lend an honest, neutral and supportive ear. When life gets hard, we encounter setbacks and need guidance along the way. I look forward to being that third-party to actively listen to your challenges and provide guidance and support throughout your journey.

It's taking a toll on your family , relationships, and quality of life.
We help couples in turmoil, as well as anxious perfectionists, stressed out high-achievers, and women struggling with confidence. "We're always fighting." "We don't connect anymore." "I feel alone in my marriage." Whether it be difficulty communicating, struggles around intimacy, or conflict resolution, our goal is to support both parties with practical tools, as well as a deeper understanding of the self and the partner.

There may be many reasons you are seeking therapy at this time. You may be coping with a specific stressor or transition, dealing with old unresolved pain, or just feel like you're not living or relating as fully as you would like. You may find yourself frustrated by the role you repeatedly play in your relationships. Therapy can provide a safe environment in which to explore these issues and address the barriers and resistance to change. I help my clients to look at their experiences in new ways and imagine and create new possibilities for themselves.

I work collaboratively with a seasoned marriage and family clinician, a counselor specializing in adolescents, and a counselor specializing in young children to provide a wraparound approach to treating the family unit.
We sometimes need help navigating life's challenges, whether they occur at home, in school, or in the work place. Resolving adversity requires resiliency and coping mechanisms. Learning to identify triggers and stressors, focus on strengths, and work collaboratively to address concerns in a safe and judgement-free space, can help to produce positive change.

Drama Therapy for Kids: Act Your Way out of Anxiety. Is your child suffering from anxiety about school, friendships, or new situations such as divorce? Are your child's issues lowering their self-esteem? Why send your child to just talk therapy when they can heal through stories? Through drama and arts therapy kids communicate how they were meant to communicate - through storytelling and imaginary play. They act out characters, make up stories, share favorite films or t.v. shows while healing from anxiety or depression. A drama therapist speaks the child's language and quickly gets to the core of the problems.

I integrate theory and practice principals from trauma theory, psychoanalytic theory, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy and Internal Family Systems to meet the person in front of me with the approaches and tools that will be most useful.
Clients come to me for relief of symptoms of anxiety and depression, and to learn to process how trauma or complex trauma may be impacting their lives today and how to move forward from it. They also seek to gain insight into why they do what they do, to improve their agency or control over their own lives, to learn how to recognize and deal with feelings, to build their self-esteem and to find more pleasure and serenity in their lives. As we work towards the goals clients become ready and willing to make the real behavioral changes that will make a positive difference in their lives.

Times of crisis are not only occasions that require mindful problem-solving, but can also be opportunities for personal growth. Psychotherapy should provide a calm and supportive setting to reduce anxiety and stress, increase a sense of confidence and competence, and promote the establishment of more satisfying connections to others. My training encompasses psychodynamic, experiential, cognitive-behavioral, and family systems therapy. I work actively and collaboratively with individuals (from 8 to 85), couples, and families. I also provide neuropsychological evaluations for children and adults experiencing difficulties in personal, academic, or occupational functioning.

I also have a strong background in alcoholism and addiction, and have helped many spouses and family members to deal with their loved ones' addiction.
I work with people experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship problems, loss and grief, addiction, and chronic or life-threatening illness. I see myself as a guide so that clients can access their innate capacity to heal and to grow emotionally. I participate actively, giving feedback and collaborating with clients as they learn to empower themselves. The focus is often on "here-and-now" issues, but by delving into the past we can learn to understand and change the repetitive patterns that hinder our lives and relationships.

Life has become an endless string of chores. You've gotten good at smiling on the outside, but internally you're just going through the motions. The loneliness, exhaustion, and lack of motivation are eating at you. Despite the well-meant advice from friends and family members you still feel stuck, unable to live your life fully. You know you desperately need to find meaning and purpose, but you barely know how you got here, much less how to begin fixing it. Symptoms of depression are often related to traumatic experiences.

I have more than 25 years experience as a psychotherapist in private practice. I'm fortunate to be working with very bright, successful people who may be having difficulties in family or work relationships, struggling with difficult transitions, or may be experiencing anxiety, depression or self-doubt. My therapeutic approach is to explore with you the underlying causes of your concerns and then to create new ways of responding to problems so that they don't resurface.

The issues people come to therapy to get help with are depression, anxiety, grief and loss, relationship and family problems, addictions, communication and work concerns, parenting, child and family challenges.
Life can sometimes feel and be very complicated. As a psychotherapist in private practice for 25 years, I work with adults, adolescents, families and couples. The way I approach working with people is to create a compassionate, intelligent, non-judgemental, therapeutic space where a person can feel safe, heard and understood. A person can then be more at ease with talking about their concerns and problems in an authentic and meaningful way. I welcome people from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities and family structures.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
