It is my pleasure and privilege to work with individuals, couples, and families. Since receiving my Ph.D. in 1998, I have had the opportunity to offer psychotherapy to late teens and adults who are struggling with issues related to mood, anxiety, body image, self worth, and relationships. I take a highly interactive approach to treatment, engaging with my patients as they explore barriers to optimal mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Our goal, working together, is to turn those obstacles into opportunities for growth and change in personal and relationship issues.

You may appear capable on the outside yet feel stuck in cycles of self-doubt, people-pleasing, or never feeling "enough." Past wounds, from childhood experiences, painful relationships, or social pressures, can shape how you see yourself and how you move through the world. Many of the people I work with are neurodivergent, LGBTQIA+, or individuals who have navigated racism, ableism, sexism, or other forms of marginalization and have learned to mask or minimize parts of themselves to get by.

Using substances or other ways of coping that you don't fully understand. I specialize in complex trauma, sexual trauma, and addiction, including the ways past experiences can continue showing up in relationships long after they're over.

Life is hard and trauma of all kinds can wear down the strongest of us! But it is the strong who actually ask for help to deal with the challenges that life today throws at us. As a Cognitive-Behavioral therapist who practices from the Strengths Perspective, I work with my clients to identify those thoughts, behaviors and situations that might be holding them back, and implement a plan that will meet their goals. My goal is not to keep anyone in therapy for the rest of their lives, but rather to utilize therapy to overcome their challenges and achieve the inner peace they deserve.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
