I have worked extensively with issues of anxiety, depression, self-esteem,
grief
and PTSD, just to name a few.
I have had over 42 years of experience treating adolescents, adults, couples, families and groups, primarily utilizing the Cognitive Behavioral therapy approach, along with healthy doses of humor (when appropriate, of course). I am a firm believer that the bedrock of successful treatment begins with establishing a solid connection and rapport with the people I treat. My philosophy is that the patient is the captain of the ship and I am the navigator; the captain tells me where he/she wants to go (goals) and I suggest the routing to get there - and as a team...we'll get there!

loss
, or generally liking yourself better.

If painful experiences were met with confusing or anxious responses from others or described in manners that did not respond to emotional needs, then a child or individual would likely cope with difficulties by disconnecting from the threatening emotional meanings. We need another at times, or search for a healing process. If you have been struggling with strong feelings or a particular situation, it is time to get help. You can find the way through fears,
loss
or other struggles. I am here to support you through your struggles, through personal hardships, finding truths or make sense of confusion in your mind or life.

Asking for help is difficult. It can feel frightening to imagine feeling exposed to another, delving into places that are unknown or unwanted. We know what it is like to be brought to your knees. When breathing hurts, and thinking is excruciating. You want help, but at the same time you’re terrified of it. You wonder whether the looking will make the suffering worse. The fear of being vulnerable is overpowering because some part of you is expecting to get hurt.

My specialty is difficult life transitions. Perhaps you have just received a serious illness diagnosis for yourself or someone in your family. Or you have recently lost someone you love. Maybe you're a parent struggling to balance family, work and self-care. You may feel too discouraged, too overwhelmed, or too exhausted to make a change. As an experienced hospice social worker and birth doula, I have witnessed pain and suffering, as well as the growth, strength and joy that become possible amidst difficult circumstances.

Grief Therapists
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
