Secondly, having accumulated experience working with three orientations, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral and behavioral, I am able to integrate these approaches in my practice.
In searching for a psychotherapist, it is likely that you have a specific problem in mind. When these problems intensify or linger for long periods of time, they can lead to symptoms of anxiety and/or depression which interfere with your quality of life and sense of well-being. If you are seeking help in overcoming these difficulties, there are two important factors to consider when choosing a therapist. First, it is important that, after a few visits with the therapist, you feel that there is potential to form a strong working alliance.

My therapeutic approach is informed by psychodynamic, attachment, and cognitive behavioral theories while incorporating mindfulness and current developments in neuroscience.
Psychotherapy provides an opportunity for self-exploration essential to our growth. It provides an arena to understand our current struggles and to heal from the hurts and traumas of current and past experiences. I provide a safe space in a relational context that facilitates discussion, expression, and understanding to increase our freedom from depression, anxiety, and other symptoms and generate emotional well-being.

I utilize a collaborative therapeutic process informed by Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness and Interpersonal Psychotherapy.
People usually seek therapy during times of great stress, when their lives feel out of control, or when they are increasingly anxious or depressed, or when they feel stuck or dissatisfied, and are looking for change. My goal is to provide you a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere that will help you express yourself, explore and clarify your feelings, understand yourself and others, find options, and make changes in your life. I view psychotherapy as an active collaboration and seek to create a welcoming and comfortable base of strengthening support.

I am an experienced psychotherapist who has been practicing in the field for over twenty years, fifteen years in private practice. I see clients in New Jersey and New York state. I have advanced, post-graduate training in gestalt therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy. I am genuine, funny, intelligent, sensitive, warm, and I can also be firm/direct depending on the need of the client. Sometimes we need different things in the work.. it takes an experienced, intuitive therapist to help us to really get to the heart of what we need to grow. I have helped many clients through quite challenging things in their lives.

People seek therapy for a variety of reasons. Some seek personal growth or are struggling with addictions, depression, anxiety or relationship issues etc. People are individuals who respond in their own particular way to therapy. I work collaboratively with my clients and utilize various therapy techniques depending on their needs. One of the most important factors in therapy is having a positive therapeutic relationship where trust can be formed and the person feels validated.

I draw from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), psychodynamic, person-centered, and play therapy techniques.
Teens are experiencing anxiety and depression at an increased rate. The pressures of school, friendships, and social media are overwhelming. You are noticing that your teen is irritable, withdrawn, expressing excessive worry or sadness, and having difficulty managing their emotions. Communication between you and your teen is tense or non-existent. My goal in therapy is to help your teen identify their emotions and develop coping strategies to improve their emotional-well being. I work to quickly build rapport with your teen so that they feel comfortable to speak about their problems and feelings.

I have a psychodynamic approach and have experience with CBT and DBT.
Are life’s stressors impacting your sense of well-being, your family life or other relationships? Anxiety and depression can immobilize us, leaving us feeling a loss of control and sometimes we just can't make things better on our own. Together we can identify which obstacles are preventing you from achieving your personal goals and then determine how to help you overcome those obstacles. By understanding our past and how we have come to our current situations, we can better prepare and take charge of our lives. Understanding and accepting ourselves is the pathway to freedom and happiness.

I believe most ailments in life arise when we are unhappy in relationships, whether that is with ourselves or with the special people in our lives. Coming from a humanistic lens, my approach to counseling is focused on improving these connections through inner growth. I do not tend to follow one therapy modality; instead, I tailor my counseling based on the client to meet their individual needs and facilitate self-awareness.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
