What gets in the way of having a satisfying life? Repetitive behaviors, thoughts, and feelings can be troubling. How can problems be resolved? Through talk therapy! Individuals, couples, and families enter treatment with concerns: issues in relationships, addictions, careers, school issues, depression, anxiety, parenting, child/adolescent issues, phobias, and many others. I work collaboratively with clients to resolve issues that prevent having a fulfilled life or reaching goals or accomplishments. For over 25 years I have worked with adolescents, families, individuals, couples, and young adults. Why not discuss your concerns?

I know the idea of starting therapy may be scary and uncertain, but having someone to talk to who listens may be the first step to a better life. Discussing your current problems or past traumas with a skilled and empathic listener is a way of working through life events or difficult relationships whether at home, work or school. Therapy can help you identify underlying issues or inner conflicts that get in the way of realizing your highest potential and achieving your dreams.

Sometimes, when we feel anxious or depressed, life can appear to come to a standstill. The rest of the world is moving, but we feel stuck or fearful of moving forward. As your therapist, I will provide a safe space for you to explore what may be holding you back. I will help guide you towards making positive changes and choices.

Do you often feel overwhelmed, misunderstood, anxious, frustrated, helpless? Are you struggling with emotional and physical intimacy in your relationships? Do you struggle to feel close to others and to yourself? Have you experienced sexual assault or trauma? Do you wish you could feel less afraid to express what you need and how you feel? Struggling with these feelings often leaves us feeling stuck, exhausted, unfulfilled. They can also accompany more serious emotional or behavioral symptoms. Therapy can help you cope with and resolve the disturbing experiences and pain that are causing you distress.

Many things can trigger a call to a therapist: Overwhelming anxiety, persistent feelings of depression, unfulfilling or problematic relationships at home or at work, or sudden changes in life circumstances (health, financial, or interpersonal). Talking to a therapist in a supportive environment can be very helpful. Therapy helps you figure out what you want to get out of life, identify what gets in your way, and work out new ways of approaching your goals. When you come in regularly to talk, exploring patterns and identifying factors that interfere with achieving goals, your life tends to improve.

I do no-baloney psychotherapy; that is to say, if you want to study yourself and grow, we will get along. If you need to blame others, you will be happier elsewhere. Many clients who have had "therapy" before react to my work with expressions such as, "This is how it should have been years ago," or, "Oh wow, this is what I always wanted." I also enjoy working with couples and frequently work with both parties separately and the couple together.

Whether therapy is something you feel you need, something you want, or something your parents are making you do, understanding your deeper self is never a bad choice. But it can be a challenging one. I honor any person willing or wanting to embark on that adventure, and focus on helping my clients to identify, understand, and explore the aspects of their lives and their selves that feel stuck, painful, or not quite where they want them to be. I firmly believe that depth of understanding, emotional awareness, and rejuvenated coping skills are the foundations of progress, confidence, and success.

Everyone faces adversity in their lives, but with the right coping skills and support, one can learn to move through life feeling healthy, happy and whole. A therapist can offer the trust, connection, time and attention necessary to help their client achieve his or her personal goals, whether it's learning to break free from a cycle of anxiety and/or depression, dealing with loss, struggling with self-esteem or dealing with an eating disorder. The therapeutic relationship can be a corrective experience, allowing clients to take what is learned in therapy and use it in everyday relationships and experiences.

I am a psychotherapist with over 45 years experience treating adults, older children, adolescents and couples. Sometimes people need help with specific problems such as marital discord, parenting, extended family conflicts or navigating life transitions. Persistent concerns such as lowered self-esteem, a pattern of unsuccessful romantic or work relationships, addictions, anxiety, depression and obsessive/compulsive behaviors often benefit from a professional hand. The goal in therapy is to make you aware of the patterns and beliefs that impair your ability to relate successfully with others and improve your self-esteem.

I help people feel better about themselves and gain clarity and mastery over their lives. YOU ARE NOT A DIAGNOSIS! Your life experiences created pain or distress. These may be: relationship difficulties, anxiety or depression, facing loss through divorce, death or illness, becoming mired in self-criticism or feeling paralyzed by fears of change. You may have experienced trauma that left marks on your system. You may NOT have experienced trauma but find yourself facing a sudden challenge (such as loss, illness, parenting difficulties, job stress, etc.) in your current life. You may be experiencing ongoing issues that leave you feeling unable to cope.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
