You, like so many of us who have survived sexual abuse, often find yourself struggling to create and keep healthy relationships. More often than not, you have a hard time standing up for yourself. You have worked so hard to make yourself feel safe, confident, steady, and worthy. You seek peace at each sunset and hope at each sunrise. Still, there are times when the nightmares haunt you in your sleep, and the flashbacks freeze you when awake. You seek escape from the trauma of your past, but rarely find long-lasting relief. You want to emerge from the turmoil of your past and find your Paths to Healing.

Congratulations on taking the first step in your quest for a more fulfilling life. According to Dr. Oz, 60% of women feel lonely or isolated, which leads to depression and anxiety. My practice aims to reduce this number through individual group counseling combined with holistic yoga and meditation. Together we will help you feel empowered while connecting with others. I believe life is a series of obstacles upon which we have the freedom to learn, change and grow. I welcome the opportunity to team with you as we unlock your true potential.

I specialize in working with adolescents and adults who are struggling with all forms of eating disorders and disordered eating. Clients who come to see me may have just been diagnosed with an eating disorder or have been struggling for years. Some clients aren't sure if they have an eating disorder, but know they are struggling with food and their body. Clients often reach out to me because they know that I practice from a Health at Every Size(R) framework and they want treatment that is not stigmatizing about weight. Adolescent clients and their families often seek me out because of my expertise doing Family Based Treatment.

I believe therapy can help one learn to navigate strong emotions and better regulate one's responses to life's challenges. Feeling understood and validated by one's therapist can allow one to develop insight into thoughts, feelings and behaviors. In knowing the context and meaning that underlies how we relate to the self, to others and to the world, we have greater choice in breaking free from distressing patterns that may be keeping us stuck. Over time, the therapeutic relationship becomes the vehicle that allows one to carve a personal and professional life that feels satisfying and deeply meaningful.

What is Art Therapy? This is the number one question asked of me. Briefly, as defined by the American Art Therapy Association (AATA), "Art therapy is a mental health profession in which clients, facilitated by the art therapist, use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem. A goal in art therapy is to improve or restore a client's functioning and his/her sense of personal well-being." The creative process lends itself readily to meeting the individual where they are at in the present moment. My personal style mirrors this. I utilize both the non-verbal and verbal processes to facilitate understanding, awareness and growth. My particular areas of expertise are grief/loss, attachment issues (i.e.foster care/adoption), trauma, mood instability, and disordered personality.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
