Learning to grieve losses and adapt to life changes are challenges we will all face. A major
loss
such as the
death
of a loved one, divorce, or
loss
of a job can be devastating. Creating a new chapter in your life can be overwhelming. Working with a skilled, compassionate therapist in a safe, nurturing environment can provide critical support and guidance. My goal is to help you find light and hope during a dark time and to teach new coping skills to allow for healing and personal growth. Reaching out is the hardest part. I’d love to talk to you about your unique situation and needs.

What is Art Therapy? This is the number one question asked of me. Briefly, as defined by the American Art Therapy Association (AATA), "Art therapy is a mental health profession in which clients, facilitated by the art therapist, use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem. A goal in art therapy is to improve or restore a client's functioning and his/her sense of personal well-being." The creative process lends itself readily to meeting the individual where they are at in the present moment. My personal style mirrors this. I utilize both the non-verbal and verbal processes to facilitate understanding, awareness and growth. My particular areas of expertise are
grief
/
loss
, attachment issues (i.e.foster care/adoption), trauma, mood instability, and disordered personality.

Grief
is continuous and can be difficult to navigate.
Grief
is a normal process people experience after a
loss
.
Grief
can become messy, complicated, and turn us into a tangled ball of emotions. But experiencing these messy and complicated emotions does not mean we are broken or damaged. We just need someone to understand the intense emotions felt on a daily basis. And realize that some days are harder than others, especially if it's a special occasion. Or when we hear a song or see a place that sparks a particular memory. And more importantly we will never "get over" the
loss
of our loved one. Missing our loved one becomes a part of who we are.

Hi there! Welcome to my practice, SEED Services: Partners for Counseling & Wellness. We use evidence based approaches, including Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and the Gottman Method for couples counseling to name a few. Currently, most of my own work supports individuals who struggle with high levels of self-criticism, shame, and the patterns of avoidance or over-striving that are often associated with anxiety, depression, problem perfectionism, and trauma. We also specialize in couples counseling and working with relational
grief
, or losses due to life transitions and "post"-COVID living.

There is special pain in people's experiences of disappointment,
loss
, and dehumanization from sources they hoped and believed would be trustworthy-religion, family, school, work, and personal relationships.
Welcome. I am a pastorally trained psychotherapist who works with people who are struggling with painful and difficult issues, events, people, and feelings-without quite getting to where they want to be. The work I do and like best is joining you in understanding the story of that struggle and moving it forward. The main personal values I bring to that work and offer to you are kindness, respect, and enthusiasm-with a premium on honesty, openness and curiosity from both of us. I view my work with clients and their stories as a powerful healing partnership.

I have experience working with issues related to life transitions,
grief
and
loss
, trauma and difficulties in all relationships.
I believe therapy can help one learn to navigate strong emotions and better regulate one's responses to life's challenges. Feeling understood and validated by one's therapist can allow one to develop insight into thoughts, feelings and behaviors. In knowing the context and meaning that underlies how we relate to the self, to others and to the world, we have greater choice in breaking free from distressing patterns that may be keeping us stuck. Over time, the therapeutic relationship becomes the vehicle that allows one to carve a personal and professional life that feels satisfying and deeply meaningful.

It is to walk alongside you in times of transition, stress, anxiety, depression, loneliness, and
grief
.
You have had days that make you feel like switching off the sun, crawling underneath your skin, and checking out from this catastrophic cantankerous world. You have been emotionally shipwrecked by life, fragmented by negative experiences, and you feel broken beyond repair. Yesterday was too much, today you're drowning in the sea of despair; and, tomorrow should not see the light of day. Existing feels like too much to ask, survival seems impossible, and you're thinking, "I can't do this..." Maybe you can't, but we can, and we will. You may feel alone, but you are not alone. You may sway and bend, but you will never break.

My primary specialties are LGBTQ+ issues, particularly working with Trans/Enby youth,
grief
and
loss
issues, and pregnancy and parenting issues.
I believe in meeting clients where they are at! Every person is resilient. I intend our collaboration to remind you of your strengths, provide you tools to weather the storms of life, and a safe space to gain insight into your truest self. I come to social work from a social justice background and recognize that trauma and oppression are often intertwined. Acknowledging systemic issues is a vital part of my practice, particularly for youth and families directly impacted by it. Teaching you to advocate successfully on your own behalf, whether it be in your relationships or larger systems, is also essential.

I value the vital role of the therapeutic relationship in the process of healing and personal growth. My aim is to help clients become more aware of the thoughts and emotions that underlie their distress. With new insights, unhelpful emotional and behavioral patterns can change, opening up new ways of experiencing oneself and others. I see individuals who are struggling with feelings of sadness, disappointment and
loss
, as well as worry and anxiety. Many who seek care feel dissatisfied in their relationships, unfulfilled at work or in school, or are looking for ways to manage the stress of serious illness or life-altering events.

Grief Therapists
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
