Do you feel so overwhelmed and numb that you feel everything and nothing at the same time? Do you struggle with self-doubt, low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety? My approach works to address the internal dialogue that contributes to problematic patterns of behavior and painful emotions. I understand how limiting it can be when critical or perfectionistic self-talk inhibits you from making the positive changes that you are seeking. I aim to help you become your greatest supporter instead of your biggest critic and to learn to relate with yourself in a new way that promotes growth and healing.

I am passionate about providing high quality treatment for someone affected by addiction and/or mental health. With my dual licenses as a licensed clinical social worker and a licensed clinical drug and alcohol counselor, I have the unique training, education, and experience to provide therapy for individuals suffering from an addiction or mental health disorder and their spouses and families. I am a fierce advocate for mental health and a collaborative counselor. I am a firm believer that clients are the experts of their own lived experiences and, therefore, are already armed with the tools they need to start their healing journey - it just might take some empowering and empathic listening to help get there. Together, my clients and I work on building rapport, which I believe is the most important part of counseling. I enjoy uplifting and supporting clients, while also challenging their ways of thinking, making her a non-judgmental and compassionate, but realistic, sounding board.

Hello! My name is Shannon and I am working towards my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Adams State University. I have my Masters degree in Exercise Science from Kean University. I am extremely passionate about the mind-body connection and how different types of movement can influence and improve mental health. I believe incorporating a combination of therapy modalities like meditation, breathwork, yoga, and physical movements can deepen healing from current and past traumas. I believe that humans are incredibly resilient and sometimes we just need a little help reconnecting with our inner knowing.

People create change when they feel heard, validated, and can adjust their thinking to realize the strength hiding inside of them. What I love about being a therapist is the ability to help people develop skills and examine their thought process so they can address life’s challenges, realize their worth and value, and be able to live again. While my specialty is primarily in anxiety/panic disorders, I work in a variety of areas, including creative/entertainment/sports professionals, OCD, LGBTQ+ concerns, and anger management. Together, we can examine and navigate your concerns and find the next best steps to move you forward.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
