It is a dream come true for me to be able to work with clients in Spanish or French which includes the challenge of engaging adolescents in family therapy who often do not speak their parents' language.
I love working with all ages but have specific expertise working with children as young as 2 years old in English, Spanish, French, and some very basic Mandarin. After training together in individual, family , and Child Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) my mother and I founded The Hamilton Practice in 1995. As we worked with survivors of childhood trauma and sexual abuse in Harlem for a combined seventeen years, we were stunned by the miracles that unfolded as we applied the power and simplicity of CCPT. My mom left her body in August 2021, so you will see only me, but you will be benefiting from the synergy of two generations.

We all want to feel confident, balanced and happy. The reality is we get stuck, frustrated, hurt, disappointed and sad...These periods of personal struggle can be an opportunity for growth and hope instead of continued hurt and personal crisis. Talking to a therapist offers an avenue to understand what is happening to you and your relationships (ie. with loved ones, friends, family , and of course yourself). It is an experience that can help you feel listened to, understood, and help you find solutions to improve how you feel and live.

In treating children, I feel therapy is most effective when the family is closely involved.
I bring over 15 years of experience to treating adults, teens, and children. I specialize in treating depression, anxiety, and behavior issues. When I work with adults, my focus is on understanding the factors that have led up to the current symptoms, and on understanding the person's strengths. By building on individual strengths, therapy can guide us back to our best selves.

I work with adults and millennial's who may be experiencing transitional struggles, stressors, relationship issues, lack of structure, poor communication skills, depression, anxiety, family conflict, and addictions.
Life is a journey, and in an increasingly connected world our ability to find balance may prove to be challenging and increase emotional vulnerabilities. "Down time" becomes less and less due to the pressures of society or of our own negative tapes that we play . My main focus is to reconnect and build a therapeutic relationship in an environment where the individual can work on formulating positive communication, set realistic personal goals, identify patterns of behaviors, and work on resolving issues in the here and now.

I have an innovative and eclectic approach that is based on the individual, couple, or family .
Ever feel like you’re stuck circling the same territory over and over? You may feel stagnated, simply standing still while life seems to be passing you by. But you were created to grow… Somewhere along the way, you’ve lost your sense of self. Perhaps you’re lacking purpose, looking to discover your creativity, or connect with your tribe of support. The reality of where you are has you anxious, fearful, hurt, or simply just lost. Deep down inside you believe there’s got to be more and you’re on a journey to find it.

Throughout my career, I have been a champion of family life and have served people of every age, and phase (single, married, parenting, empty nester, retired, and managing chronic health diagnoses).
We are wired for connection, but we experience challenges when we struggle to keep our relationships stable. Managing life can be overwhelming if we do not have the right supports in place and fail to equip ourselves with the needed tools. My goal as a therapist is to aid my clients in maintaining wellness in all areas of their life. How we think and how we feel are the greatest contributors to the reality we live. I will help you to embrace what is helping and release what no longer serves you.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
