I believe we are all born whole and therefore inherently know our own truth. Through years of external judgements and internal doubts, we lose this connection. Healing comes from within. My role is to facilitate the reconnection with your core self to promote healthier, satisfying relationships within yourself, family friends and the world at large.

If you are struggling with personal, family or relationship issues, I offer a slightly different approach than you might expect. Contrary to how some view therapy, I believe there is far more "right" than "wrong" with people who seek help -- strengths allowing them to overcome seemingly overwhelming obstacles. I'm a therapist, but I'm also a parent and husband who makes plenty of mistakes. Luckily, perfection isn't necessary or even desirable, as it often takes only small, positive changes to yield significant benefits. Things can get better, sometimes quickly, if you begin taking steps in the right direction.

You and your partner feel like strangers & are no longer on the same page. There’s barely any intimacy or affection, you’re constantly arguing, making you feel overwhelmed, like you can’t get anything right. Perhaps you just found out they’ve been cheating or maybe you’re unsure if the relationship is worth fighting for. Utilizing research backed interventions by Dr. John Gottman, I help couples repair wounds to rebuild trust and intimacy. My ideal clients are working professionals seeking results, who value identifying the root cause of the issues and being given a roadmap to healing.

Most people enter therapy looking to change some aspect of their lives. Some people know exactly how they want their lives to be different and simply need help developing skills to achieve their goals. Other people may need to spend more time determining exactly what type of change they need.

Coping with day-to-day life in these difficult times is a struggle for many. Would you like support while navigating certain situations? Are you a new mom struggling or perhaps a caregiver or part of the “sandwich generation” seeking some understanding and support? It can be debilitating feeling sad and worried most of the time. Life changes are exciting and can be wonderful, sometimes they are necessary and even unpleasant; having support is essential during these times.

Entering into therapy can provoke an array of emotions and that is okay! Opportunities towards recovery and healing are always available. You have already accomplished the first step by choosing to seek help. Your journey starts now. I believe the therapeutic relationship is built on collaboration and transparency. I encourage clients to explore their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors to identify cognitive and behavioral patterns that interfere with their well-being and productivity.

I’m Maggie Panageas, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years of experience providing therapy to teens and adults. I specialize helping people who are struggling with depression, anxiety, gender identity, and feelings of loneliness. Sometimes life circumstances, such as a difficult childhood, divorced parents, social isolation, or trauma can leave us feeling alone and without hope. It is the human desire for connection - first to ourselves by learning to accept and love ourselves and second by developing positive and healthy relationship with others that draws many of us to therapy.

I work with individuals, couples and families. I help people who are "stuck" in their personal life and / or career free themselves to make better decisions and attain their goals. This can include finding a greater sense of purpose, resolving conflicts with significant people in your life and aiding in the challenging transitions we all face in life. In addition to my private practice I consult to organizations on the stresses at work, work / life balance and career coaching.

I believe every person has the ability to write their own story and deserves to be heard and respected without judgment. My ideal client is looking to learn healthy ways to cope with situations and the related emotions, and to communicate with others to strengthen/build their support system. I tell my clients often that anxiety, depression, and traumatic experiences can change how we view life, like a filter, which can hide our strengths. Throughout our sessions, I will assist you in gaining insights into what thoughts and emotions contribute to this filter, so we can work together and help you view life with a balanced perspective.

How can I find a therapist in Hunterdon County?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
