Not everyone has the same approach to life's problems such as
grief
,
loss
,
bereavement
, illness and stress, nor to the typical challenges of family relationships. The context of culture, ethnicity, race, gender, class, sexual orientation and spiritual beliefs influence the ways in which we view the world and how the world views us. I work with children, teens, individuals, couples and families to resolve issues in a way that is sensitive to their culture and context; and together we develop solutions that are congruent with their values.

New clients often ask, "how will talking to you about my problems help me?" All of us on this web site would probably agree that working with a caring and interested therapist can have positive, even dramatic, results - - whether that means the relief of depression and anxiety, feeling better and happier in your intimate relationships, dealing with
loss
, or generally liking yourself better.
What is the first meeting like? I want to hear about your immediate concerns, to get to know something of your life story, and to see how we might work together to achieve your goals.

If you are struggling after a loved one's
death
or you are part of the "sandwich generation" caring for multiple generations often simultaneously, I can help. I have 20 years of experience working with adults who are stressed because of depression, anxiety and
grief
. If you are grieving what "might have been" if you or your spouse didn't have an illness, know that you do not have to bear this burden alone. I have extensive experience working collaboratively with adults, older adults and their families as they navigate the complexities of life related to
loss
, illness, aging, or care giving.

The majority of my clients are adults who are seeking ways to manage depression and anxiety, which may be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term). The most common issues are associated with relationships, family dynamics, adjustment to new situations,
bereavement
and end-of-life care. I also work with those caring for loved ones with dementia and other long-term illnesses.

Life can be challenging. We all go through difficult times, get confused, feel stressed, experience
loss
. Some of us seek therapy because we suffer from depression, anxiety, illness and relationship problems; others may simply feel 'stuck" in some way. As a therapist with over 30 years of experience, my goal is to create a safe and supportive environment to guide clients to explore their needs, identify their strengths, gain a better understanding of what is and is not working in their lives, and to provide strategies to help them solve problems and achieve a more satisfying and fulfilling life.

If painful experiences were met with confusing or anxious responses from others or described in manners that did not respond to emotional needs, then a child or individual would likely cope with difficulties by disconnecting from the threatening emotional meanings. We need another at times, or search for a healing process. If you have been struggling with strong feelings or a particular situation, it is time to get help. You can find the way through fears,
loss
or other struggles. I am here to support you through your struggles, through personal hardships, finding truths or make sense of confusion in your mind or life.

loss

Life often presents us with many challenges, most of which are unexpected. If you are feeling stressed, anxious, or sad, because of your life circumstances, you don't have to suffer alone. While reaching out for help can be difficult, you may feel comforted in knowing that most people feel some apprehension in taking this first step.

We all tell stories to and about ourselves. The stories we tell can empower us, and sometimes we find that our stories do not serve us. At its core, therapy is a safe space for you to tell your story. As a licensed clinical psychologist, I value the story each person has to tell. My compassionate and non-judgmental approach allows me to collaborate with you, to understand your experiences and where you may be feeling overwhelmed or stuck. I will support you in the process of gaining insight, in order to facilitate meaningful change. I strive to build a strong bond with my clients, to help you feel more at ease within yourself.

, depression, anxiety, impulsive behaviors, self-injury, addiction, suicidality, and dissociative disorders.
I am an experienced licensed clinical social worker trained at the IFS institute. I take an integrative approach to therapy, emphasizing healing mind, body, and soul. I believe that therapy should be enjoyable and non-judgmental. I am told that I create a collaborative and compassionate environment where my clients and I are able to tap into deep inner wisdom, provide insight, and apply concrete methods to heal and move forward. The result? Becoming brave enough to build a deep connection to your truest self and live authentically. Spirituality is incorporated, as desired.

When you are overwhelmed with emotions like doubt, anxiety or even emptiness, it may feel as though you are drowning in an ocean of despair. You’ve probably told the closest people in your life about what you’re experiencing, but you fear being a burden to someone else and you can’t seem to shut off the negative thoughts that continue to invade your brain. The worry and
loss
of control you feel may manifest into eating disorders, OCD, and various anxiety disorders in order to temporarily relieve pain. That's when a mental health professional can help!

I believe that stress affects us on all levels: mind, body, and spirit. Whether it is depression, anxiety, relationship struggles,
loss
, or life transitions, a person needs to be treated on all levels. Additionally, each person experiences the interaction between the three in a unique way, and treatment must reflect that difference between clients. In addition to a doctorate in clinical psychology, I have advanced training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (www.sensorimotorpsychotherapy.org) and EMDR (www.emdr.com), both mind/body psychotherapies.

Grief Therapists
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
