My name is Kim Mackanic and I’ve provided therapeutic services for trauma survivors and individuals facing mental health and addiction issues since 2009.
Each part of your identity (race, culture, gender, sexual orientation, ability, and more) impacts how you experience the world and how the world responds to you. Using a social justice framework, we can begin to understand how we got here, how to create and advocate for change, and how to imagine a more equitable future.

I have been in clinical practice for over 15 years, certified in EMDR, and specialize in working with trauma and attachment-related concerns.
Providing my clients with a comfortable, open, non-judgmental environment is key to developing a trusting relationship. I have found it to be so important for my clients to recognize and build upon their own strengths. In our work together we can establish definable goals for treatment and uncover various patterns that developed over time. After obtaining a Master's Degree from Columbia University, I had the opportunity to work in both inpatient and outpatient settings. I started my own practice in 2014 and received my professional license (LCSW) in 2009.

I work with clients who may be struggling with depression, anxiety, and trauma.
Psychotherapy is a profession whose mainspring is love. Nearly everyone who visits a therapist has a love disorder, and each has a story to tell of love lost or denied, love twisted or betrayed, love perverted or shackled to violence. I use holism to help the patient reconnect, remember and reimagine. Much of what causes us distress comes from a lack of integration with our biological, psychological, social, and spiritual selves. I am excited about partnering with you in your journey of finding wholeness.

My approach uses an integration of techniques: EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Internal Family Systems, Somatic Tracking, and skills to help regulate your nervous system. We can learn how to work with the body and neurological system to make life more manageable. We can assess survival patterns and help recondition new ways of responding to them allowing for more choice, less overwhelm, and wiser relationships.

My ideal clients include children adolescents experiencing depression related to identity challenges, family conflict, and low self-esteem. These youth often benefit from developing stability in at least one area of their lives and strengthening their ability to set and maintain healthy boundaries within their environments. When their core needs are acknowledged and supported, they can reduce self-blame and experience meaningful decreases in depressive symptoms.
I am also deeply interested in working with couples who are seeking to improve communication, rebuild trust, or navigate significant transitions.

I became a therapist because I have always cared deeply about people’s emotional well-being. I appreciate the opportunity to listen with empathy and compassion, supporting others as they thoughtfully explore and make sense of their feelings in a safe and accepting environment.
I value being present with individuals as they gain clarity and strength through their own experiences. I am committed to understanding emotions within the context of life’s challenges, including how culture, identity, and societal influences shape one’s experiences. My work is guided by empathy, curiosity, and a commitment to seeing you fully as you are.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
