I'm an atheist therapist with acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and existential therapy backgrounds; but your therapy depends on you.
My style is relaxed and humorous. We'll look at how you think and the things you do, learn about the way your brain works, handle stress, do self-care and self-love, and accept what can't be changed. We can also process the past, set goals for the future, and explore your personal philosophies.

We are all products of our families and life experiences. Not all of these influences are helpful and can create road blocks to living the life that we truly want. Fully understanding ourselves within the context of the family and interpersonal relationships can facilitate personal growth and lead to a life that is fulfilling and meaningful. Through therapy we can create a safe and supportive place for you to feel accepted, explore and alleviate the elements that have kept you stuck, and uncover your true potential.

I specialize in working with adult couples and individuals who experience relationship challenges (managing conflict, communication, negative patterns, codependency, infidelity, separation/divorce, intimacy) and the impact of trauma - specifically, attachment and developmental trauma. My approach is warm, empathic, professional, and direct - providing a safe, supportive space to heal and grow. I help my clients discover how their wounds from past relationships or childhood experiences contribute to their present-day issues, how they got stuck, and how to get unstuck.

Finding a therapist can be a daunting challenge, and it's courageous to even begin the process. Many of my clients have seen one or more therapists in the past, and struggled to feel understood and get the help they actually need. If that sounds like you, you’re in the right place. I am trained and practiced in addressing the root causes of suffering in individuals and relational systems, which allows me to provide the highest quality of care to children, teens, adults, couples, and families; even those who have previously struggled to find therapy helpful.

Life is full of surprising opportunities, unexpected changes, and personal challenges. Occasionally when faced with life's opportunities and difficulties we feel anxious, depressed, even immobilized with indecision. Friends and family can be a wonderful support, but sometimes we need the help of an unbiased person to listen and help us see that what might look like an impossible hurdle is really an opportunity for growth. Struggling in school or in our careers, relationship or parenting difficulties, coping with trauma, loss, and aging are all normal developmental challenges that people regularly face but that occasionally require some help and guidance.

I specialize in working with folks who are neurodivergent, neurospicy, neurocurious, and/or autistic, as well as those who are processing trauma or grief. Being neurodivergent in a neurotypical world can be incredibly draining often leading to burnout with no societal accommodations to recover from that burnout. You might be feeling "less than", othered, like a failure, or broken somehow and don't know why. You are not broken. Processing your trauma or grief alone can feel overwhelming. Often described like trying to cross a shaky wooden bridge over a chasm of intense or scary emotions.

Sometimes we find ourselves feeling stuck and unsure of what to do. Sometimes we think we know what the problem is but are unsure about what to do with that information. This is where therapy can come in - an open space in which to discuss what perhaps currently only exists in your mind. To let your thoughts breathe and to experience yourself without judgment from others and without judgment from yourself. To learn to accept yourself as who you are, to find ways to cope, healthier ways to live, and to go forward into the world with more confidence.

Therapy should be more than just talk. I offer more than just a safe space to talk about your feelings. I offer ways to truly become connected to your feelings and integrate what you learn about your feelings in therapy into your daily life. If you are overwhelmed with work, parenting, feel betrayed or hurt in the relationships, feel disconnected from others, maybe you sense a hopelessness around world events and/or maybe just want to learn more about who you are: we will work together to understand who you are, what is really good for you and what you want out of life. When you are with me, you belong, you matter, you are safe.

There are two major factors with making therapy beneficial - one is the you, the client, and by looking for a therapist, you're taking a big step! The second is the therapeutic relationship, which is strengthened over time. By allowing me to sit with you, help you process what's happening in your life, and trying different coping strategies, we're strengthening that therapeutic relationship, which makes therapy effective. I'm open to feedback and new ideas to find something that's effective for you.

Secular and Non-Religious Therapists
What is a secular and non religious approach in therapy?
Secular or non-religious therapy is a theoretical orientation used by many therapists and describes a therapeutic approach that does not rely on any specific religious or faith-based beliefs in the therapeutic process. Secular counselors will often approach therapy with an emphasis on evidence-based practices, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients, instead of relying on religious practices, such as prayer or belief in God.

Is secular therapy primarily for non-religious people?
Both religious and non-religious individuals can benefit from secular therapy. People exploring their religious or spiritual beliefs may find it especially useful to work with a secular therapist who is unbiased toward any specific religion. While religious individuals might value the connection and familiarity of seeing a counselor who shares their beliefs, secular counseling can offer them the chance to develop coping skills independent of their religious practice, which can be beneficial in various aspects of their lives.

Can a secular approach to therapy help with religious trauma?
One major reason clients may seek a secular therapist is to process previous religious experiences, including religious trauma. Secular therapists can help clients manage symptoms of the trauma through practices such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). They can also encourage clients through talk therapy or psychodynamic approaches to explore the roots of their religious trauma. Since secular therapists do not have any predetermined religious beliefs, they can be particularly helpful for clients looking to explore their own religious beliefs following a history of religious trauma.

What does non religious marriage and premarital counseling involve?
Marriage and premarital counseling typically involves a couple meeting with a therapist to discuss topics such as planning for marriage, navigating a new marriage, addressing relationship challenges, and developing better communication and conflict resolution skills. Non-religious therapists assist couples in achieving these goals without adhering to specific religious beliefs or frameworks, often emphasizing inclusivity and non-judgment, especially for "nontraditional" couples. However, seeking couples therapy from a non-religious counselor does not mean religious topics are off-limits. In fact, non-religious couples from different religious backgrounds may benefit from a secular therapist who remains neutral toward the beliefs of each partner.
