I enjoy working alongside those who need assistance with anxiety and related disorders. These issues can make you feel like your whole body is affected - it can leave you feeling isolated, scared, angry, or stuck. We all go through challenging times and are faced with difficult uncertainties. If you desire a relief from the often times debilitating "what-ifs", I would like to help. It's my goal to provide a non-judgmental, safe, and supportive space where we can begin to understand the root of what triggers your fears and thoughts. We may explore how the past impacts you today and how you view the world and those around you.

My ideal client is someone reliable and committed to treatment. I have worked in various settings and with various treatment issues. Some of these issues include Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, chronic illness or life-threatnening illness (i.e. cancer, HIV), gay-lesbian-bisexual-transsexual issues, grief/loss, relationship issues, anxiety, panic disorder, depression, and phobias.

I enjoy working in a way that is both structured, easy-going and warm. Like Ghandi said, "No-one ever understood a truth about themselves unless it is spoken with kindness." It can be painful facing aspects of our lives that we have previously avoided or self-medicated. However, I do what I can to make this safe and to go at your pace instead of mine. Although it takes a lot of courage to come to therapy and talk about these underlying issues, in the long run, there is an equivalent sense of freedom and connection.

I have practiced psychotherapy for over 25 years and love what I do every day. My approach when working with individuals, families and couples is collaborative, dynamic, creative and often humorous. I utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques, including cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic treatment and family systems therapy, depending on the needs and wishes of each patient or patients whom I treat. I feel honored and privileged to not only have the people I treat share their struggles, achievements, hopes and dreams, but to facilitate and witness their process as they make positive changes in their lives.

Beginning therapy is not an easy decision, and it takes courage to start the process of addressing a life problem or difficulty you may be experiencing. As your therapist, I am committed to working with you in order to help you make positive changes in your life. My hope is that you will leave each session with something more than you had at the beginning of the session- whether this is a new tool, skill, solution to a problem or different perspective. Our work will be actively addressing the challenges you are facing in a caring and comfortable environment.

My goal in treatment is to help individuals find more effective ways to live healthier, happier, and more successful lives. What this looks like for each client depends on individualized treatment goals. Among my specialties is the treatment of anxiety and depression. I successfully help parents shift their children's behaviors from problematic to more cooperative and positive. I also specialize in trauma recovery, treating victims of childhood abuse, major accidents, rape, domestic violence, community violence, other crimes etc. In addition, I also work with issues related to adoption, the death of a loved one, divorce, etc.

I have been practicing for 30+ years, and I am committed to working with you collaboratively, to create a therapeutic environment that is safe and one which recognizes that it takes courage to begin to address one's pain. My training is eclectic, which allows me to find the best way to help you to feel yourself, again, whether that may include cognitive behavioral therapy, insight-oriented, psychodynamic therapy, relaxation/mindfulness training or some other therapeutic path to personal change.

I work best with individuals in which are internally motivated for change, looking to work collaboratively alongside the individual to explore depression, anxiety, PTSD, codependency, and much more. My approach to therapy is person-centered and solution-focused, focused on offering a kind, compassionate, yet straightforward approach to growth, which encourages individuals to think deeper and build connections that will assist them with a better understanding of the underlying issues. I believe that the client-therapist relationship is by far the most important aspect that encourages internal growth.

How long does OCD treatment take?
OCD is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.
What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.
Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.
Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
