I am a clinical psychologist with experience doing therapy and evaluations with people of all ages. My work centers on viewing things contextually and looking at how they interact and influence one another. I believe that every person, and every problem, exists in a context, and that understanding the context will help to understand the person, or the problem.
Since I began practicing psychotherapy in 1999, I have accompanied individuals particularly experiencing difficulty with life stress, process of acculturation, depression, anxiety, relationship conflicts, issues stemming from childhood, as well as recent or unresolved trauma/PTSD. For individuals interested, I am able to incorporate as well as spiritual components into the psychotherapy treatment. I am trained in the use of (EMDR) Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing.
The belief here is that we are born with the ability to self-generate the changes we might be seeking at any point in the life-span. Therapy, then, is collaboration: client and therapist cooperatively removing those "inner" obstacles that can block the natural growth process--that can make us feel so dishearteningly stuck or so hopelessly overwhelmed. Therapy represents a challenging opportunity. The expectation is always that my clients will find reward in this focused collaboration, as well as in its results--and in as few sessions as possible.
There are many reasons that may have led you to seek therapy. Perhaps you are going through a difficult transition or maybe you feel something is missing in your life. Together we will explore patterns in thinking and relating that may be contributing to your suffering. The therapeutic relationship is an integral part of the healing process. I offer a safe and emotionally attuned environment that supports the gentle unfolding of change. I bring my experience, advanced training, and insight to our work together. I am a licensed professional counselor offering confidential psychotherapy for adults, adolescents, children and couples.
As a licensed psychologist in New Jersey and New York, I provide individual and family psychotherapy as well as couples counseling in my private practice. I am a warm and caring individual with an extensive background in helping others with practical, real-life solutions for better living. I am clinically trained in anxiety disorders and depression in children and adults as well as Asperger related disorders. By working closely with my clients to identify goals and clear steps to achieve these goals I have facilitated their personal growth and movement towards greater self-worth. When faced with life's challenges, sometimes we need help. Problems concerning marriage, family, and work can be emotionally draining, but with guidance, we have the resilience to work through these challenges. My practice focuses on trouble-shooting hardships; whether these hardships are personal, between partners, or within a family, the goal of our meetings is healthy functioning in the face of difficult situations. Emotional freedom is found as people increase their self-confidence. As clients progress through treatment, they often realize an improved "self" in addition to relief in the area they intended to "fix". This improved "self" enhances all areas of their lives.
I am dedicated to helping individuals develop the skills to resolve interpersonal and psychological issues. I have specialty training in family therapy, grief/bereavement counseling and in health psychology, including pain and symptom management, anxiety reduction and adjustment to illness. I am particularly sensitive to women's issues including pre- and postpartum concerns and challenges, eating disorders and body image issues. I work with adolescents in the area of behavior management, dealing with blended family issues, school avoidance and self harm. For the past two years I have been selected by New Jersey Family Magazine as a "Favorite Kid Doc".
I value building a supportive alliance that is based on honesty and frank communication. I have received excellent training from mental health experts in three major hospitals in the NYC area. My approach is psychoanalytic integrated with cognitive behavioral, emotionally focused and mindfulness approaches. Most importantly, we talk together to find out what works best for you. I am especially well suited to working with trauma victims, couples and families, and those with an interest in the bodymind perspective. Years spent living abroad inspired an interest in cross cultural dynamics and diversity.
