Marriage & Family Therapist NJ; Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP); Certified Psychotherapist and Psychoanalyst and faculty, Center for Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis of NJ; Board Certified Diplomate (ABECSW).
I am a psychotherapist with over 45 years experience treating adults, older children, adolescents and couples. Sometimes people need help with specific problems such as marital discord, parenting, extended family conflicts or navigating life transitions. Persistent concerns such as lowered self-esteem, a pattern of unsuccessful romantic or work relationships, addictions, anxiety, depression and obsessive/compulsive behaviors often benefit from a professional hand. The goal of therapy is to make you aware of the patterns and beliefs that impair your ability to relate successfully with others and improve your self-esteem.

Thirty plus years of experience utilizing psychodynamic psychotherapy in adult, marital (couples), child, and family therapy. Further training and supervision was gleaned at the Institute for Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis of N.J. Although my orientation is eclectic, I lean towards an interpersonal interactive approach with my clients, unless contraindicated. Being devoted, helpful and constructive in working together with clients to achieve whatever goals one has such as the following: relief from stress or depression, improving emotional connections & intimacy, coping with conflict, adversity, and success, & confidence building to feel hopeful and passionate about loving, working, and living life.

Psychotherapy begins in many places -- a life crisis, the loss of a loved one, an unnamed void in life, conflict in a marriage -- and becomes a journey toward healing and meaning.
I have practiced psychotherapy with individuals, couples and families since 1985. My practice consists of a rich diversity of people from all walks of life, with whom I seek to provide a supportive relationship for change and growth. It is my privilege to be in a "people-helping" profession and to see the resourcefulness of the human spirit in working through the complexity of life and becoming whole.

My approach to therapy is collaborative in nature. Rather than me being the expert and you the client, the approach provided assumes dual expertise between us. That is, I work with you to build a relationship, provide a comfortable atmosphere and then we (as a team) decide what the treatment plan will be. Only you can decide what's important and, what you are willing and ready to do. My job is to work with you from a holistic approach and accentuate your strengths, affirm your innate abilities and evoke and assist change if indicated.

I view counseling as a holistic and individual developmental process. Each individual that enters my office brings character and strengths as well as stressors and challenges. To me, it is important that together we build a trusting relationship that allows you to feel heard and validated. Having worked in both clinical and non-clinical settings, I have worked with a multitude of clients and have fostered a unique and special relationship with each, be-it child, adolescent or adult. Through our journey together, we will build upon the fundamentals of counseling: trust, communication, transparency and empowerment.

I help people feel better about themselves and gain clarity and mastery over their lives. YOU ARE NOT A DIAGNOSIS! Your life experiences created pain or distress. These may be: relationship difficulties, anxiety or depression, facing loss through divorce, death or illness, becoming mired in self-criticism or feeling paralyzed by fears of change. You may have experienced trauma that left marks on your system. You may NOT have experienced trauma but find yourself facing a sudden challenge (such as loss, illness, parenting difficulties, job stress, etc.) in your current life. You may be experiencing ongoing issues that leave you feeling unable to cope.

I have spent 10 years working with adults struggling with depression, anxiety, interpersonal conflicts, and struggles with maintaining sobriety and recovery. For some, symptoms are a nuisance that they need help managing. For others, symptoms have compromised their lives so much that they are on disability and/or repeatedly unable to attain the life goals they have set for themselves. In each case, I work with the person to find thought processes and behaviors that can improve their quality of life.

There is something unique about being able to treat children and the systems that they exist in. There are many ways to effect change in a child's life. First and foremost, I try to create a positive relationship with the child and meet them where they are. I use a number of modalities such as talk and play therapy, as well as teach skills that help build each child's tool box for life.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
