As a psychologist, I believe that good therapy builds upon a trusting, working
relationship
between therapist and client. For me, each client is a unique individual with his or her own special needs, feelings and life experiences. Of most importance is that my clients see me as a professional who listens with respect and empathy to what he or she tells me. My goal is to work collaboratively with all clients to help them examine and modify self-defeting beliefs and behaviors that prevent healthy and productive funcitoning in family, social and work or school settings.

I am a psychotherapist with over 45 years experience treating adults, older children, adolescents and
couples
. Sometimes people need help with specific problems such as marital discord, parenting, extended family conflicts or navigating life transitions. Persistent concerns such as lowered self-esteem, a pattern of unsuccessful romantic or work relationships, addictions, anxiety, depression and obsessive/compulsive behaviors often benefit from a professional hand. The goal of therapy is to make you aware of the patterns and beliefs that impair your ability to relate successfully with others and improve your self-esteem.

I have learned SO much over the past 20+ years from my clients who struggle with depression, anxiety, addiction, trauma, grief and
relationship
issues.
When others ask, "How are you?" do you respond, “Good thanks, how are you?" Is this the truth? Do you want to tell someone how you really are? Do you question your ability to cope? It doesn’t have to stay this way. Success in therapy is determined by your motivation for change and my ability to help you gain insight. I have observed amazing progress in those who commit to the process of acceptance and change.

couples
and families. I received my degree from Rutgers University and am certified in several approaches to therapy. While cognitive and behavioral therapies act as my foundation, I teach many interpersonal and self-help strategies (eg, conflict resolution, assertiveness & communication training, meditation, self-hypnosis, emotion & trauma resolution). Are you feeling down, worried, unhappy with certain circumstances or going through a difficult transition? Do you feel irritable or overwhelmed, like the stress of daily life has become unmanageable? Do you need help with parenting, family or
relationship
dynamics? Therapy is a safe, nonjudgemental place to discuss anything you need to. We will work together to identify unhealthy thoughts and/or behaviors, make changes & develop improved coping skills. Therapy does not have to last a lifetime - improvement can often be seen within a short period of time. If worries hang over you like a dark cloud, brighter days may be ahead!

Dialectical Therapy (DBT) techniques help clients address problems in regulating emotions, impulse control, assertiveness, and
relationship
conflicts. DBT balances cognitive behavioral therapy techniques with self acceptance strategies from Zen practice. Clients will be able to better identify and manage their emotions, and practice applying learned skills to improve their life in all areas.

I will examine with you, your strengths and weaknesses and your
relationship
with both, and allow you to be more intrinsic with yourself.
My goal is to inspire hope, and to serve the important functions in communal human interactions, from the family to the wider world of care giving, to create congruence and equilibrium within ourselves. I will collaborate carefully with your vulnerabilities, to comfort, explore and restore your strengths and intrinsic worth. My vision is a picture where people can individuate and stand strong for what they believe is the best for themselves.

In my 17 years as a therapist, I have worked with a range of clients, such as co-dependency, anger, OCD, phobias, panic disorders, and PTSD & trauma with individuals,
couples
, and families, and I have learned every client is vastly different. One thing that is the same is that the goal for the client is always moving towards living kind of the life they want to live. What that looks like is different for everyone because we all have our own set of values. But the stronger our values, the harder it can be to accept ourselves and others in the world. I help clients find that balance for themselves!

As individuals we may feel angry, sad, anxious or overly stressed in our daily lives. As
couples
, we may have problems in our
relationship
that lead to conflict with our
spouse
or
partner
. As parents, we may face various challenges (educational, emotional and behavioral) with our children, and need guidance in how to help them, and ourselves. These life circumstances can erode our sense of well-being and strain our relationships in all spheres of life. They stop us from functioning to the best of our capabilities. I work to improve your functioning, decrease conflict and to make life enjoyable.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
