I work with children, adolescents, young adults and families who want to make their lives happier. I specialize in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help children and adolescents who are feeling sad, irritable, frustrated, angry, or anxious. Through therapy, I work with families to help children cope with school, social, family, or health problems. In addition to CBT, I incorporate other treatment techniques to best help you and your child (e.g., play therapy, interpersonal therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, family systems, and psychodynamic techniques).

Many of the people I work with feel stuck — caught between stress, anxiety, low motivation, and trying to keep it together at school, at home, or in relationships. It’s exhausting. My goal is to help you slow down, get clear on what’s really happening, and start feeling like yourself again. I work with teens, young adults, and families to manage anxiety, depression, school stress, and life transitions. My approach is calm, supportive, and down-to-earth — no pressure, no judgment, just real conversations that help you build confidence and direction. Together, we’ll focus on building coping tools, understanding what’s underneath you

Lighthouse Counseling & Sand Play Training Center, LLC was conceived in 2000 in a tiny office in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey by Gretchen Morgan and Mary Pat McGeehin. Their search for effective treatment led them to include the use of Sand Play Therapy, EMDR, yoga and therapeutic group work with their clients. This was in response to the expanding body of research which illustrated that the mind-body connection was integral to the healing of mental health issues. In 2004, they expanded their practice to include like-minded affiliate clinicians and moved to a larger facility in Eatontown, NJ.

You love your child, but you’re exhausted. You spend your days braced for the next explosion, bargaining over the simplest tasks, and feeling the stinging judgment of others who think you just aren’t "firm" enough. You’re exhausted from the constant defiance and you’re heartbroken that your home has become a battlefield. You don’t recognize this reactive, frustrated version of yourself. I’m here to tell you that you aren’t failing; you are simply dealing with a level of behavior that standard parenting advice can’t touch.

My ideal client isn’t looking for perfect—they’re looking for honest. They might be navigating anxiety, burnout, overthinking, people-pleasing, relationship patterns, big life transitions, or trouble setting boundaries. They want a therapist who’s open-minded and relaxed, who can use humor to take the edge off, and who will gently challenge their thinking by offering different angles—not just nod along.

Deciding to start therapy for yourself or family member can be a difficult and challenging decision to make. We believe that clients entering therapy already possess the skills needed to tackle the problems they are currently facing. However, sometimes difficult and trying situations may be best approached with help of a trained professional. Our goal is to help our clients find their inner strengths, increase their coping skills and identify past successes that can be used to help them now.

I work best with children, adolescents, and families navigating anxiety, depression, mood dysregulation, ADHD, ASD, and family conflict. Many come in feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure how to manage emotions or behaviors. They’re often looking for practical tools, improved communication, and support in building confidence, structure, and stability at home and school. I also work with young adults who are navigating transitions such as college, independence, or identity development. Many are managing anxiety, stress, or feeling uncertain about their next steps, and are looking to build coping skills, clarity, and confidence.

Oppositional Defiance (ODD) Therapists
What is the most effective treatment for oppositional defiant disorder?
The treatment of Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) will involve multiple approaches designed to help both the youngster and their parents, sometimes including medication. A therapist will help a child learn ways to regulate their emotions, curb their impulsiveness, and counteract anger, defiance, and disruption, while showing parents ways to bring these lessons into their home. A technique designed for children with conditions like ODD, known as Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS), may also be used. CPS addresses a child’s concerns and rewards appropriate responses while discouraging harsh punishment or criticism.

How does treatment for oppositional defiant disorder work?
Treatment for ODD addresses the issues underlying a child’s defiance and disruption, the emotional regulation and impulse-control skills they lack, and the way adults respond to them. ODD therapy is based on the idea that children with the disorder understand the difference between right and wrong, that they want to behave well, and that, with help, they can. By responding to the child with empathy instead of harsh criticism, ignoring nonviolent behaviors, and rewarding positive actions, a therapist, and the other adults in a child’s life, can help children improve their behavior.

How long does therapy for oppositional defiant disorder take?
Therapy for oppositional defiant disorder is not a short-term undertaking. Depending on the severity of a child’s symptoms, their age, the presence of other conditions like ADHD, anxiety or a mood disorder, and their family dynamic, it can take months before improvement is noted. The cooperation of parents and teachers is crucial, because the skills learned in therapy must be practiced in real-world situations, with all their potential triggers.

Does oppositional defiant disorder go away?
ODD can remit following treatment. ODD is often diagnosed in nursery school, and early intervention is essential for a positive prognosis. In two-thirds of children, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, symptoms resolve within three years.
