Imagine the opportunity to form a relationship with an individual who can provide unconditional positive regard, empathetic understanding, and congruence. I use a non-authoritative approach to talk therapy in order to facilitate self-discovery, self-acceptance, and healing/positive growth. I believe that all of us have the power to find the best solutions for ourselves and make positive changes in our lives. I often incorporate a modified form of cognitive therapy that encompasses mindfulness practices such as meditation.

I help families break these difficult cycles by working with them to identify goals and establish plans and milestones to achieve them. I apply over 25 years of experience as I empower struggling individuals, couples, and families facing marital issues, divorce, anxiety, depression, and children/adolescents with self-destructive behaviors or ADD/ADHD as well as many other mental health issues. I believe that we all want to feel heard and understood, and experience feeling whole. These longings are inherent to the human experience. Therapy is an opportunity for me to partner with you to co-create a space that allows for this process to occur. My journey as a social worker started when I was in my 20’s and I have spent much of my life in the helper role. Personally/professionally, I have met all kinds of people, and experienced many circumstances, which have led me to develop strong therapeutic connections with individuals and families. I am non-judgmental and strength-focused, which allows for a safe space during therapy.

Due to the current health climate, phone and video sessions are available. Seeking help can often be overwhelming. This process is one that should be based on relationships. The person must be someone willing to walk with you in a way that is trusting and respectful. These are attributes I strive to maintain in my day to day life.

"When there are no enemies within, the enemies outside cannot hurt you". ~ancient African proverb~ So many suffer everyday in silence because of their own negative inner voice. Whether you are struggling due to anxiety, depression, trauma, family conflict, loss, or for any other reason, know that you do not have to suffer forever and that change is possible. I work with children, adolescents, adults and families helping each to bring their strengths into focus and harmony back into their family lives.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
