We all can reach points in our life where we become stuck and can struggle to manage thoughts, emotions and or relationships. These times can last for months or even years. Frequently we address these problems at least initially through our own means of self help. If these measures fail to unlock ourselves we can turn to psychotherapy as a process that can guide us to a different way of understanding and coping. Psychotherapy can assist in helping to understand and remove our self-imposed barriers.

Insight is good, but change is better! If you are struggling with anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem, you may have been "just living with it" for awhile. Ask yourself: "How would my life be different if I didn't feel this way?" Seeking support can be a scary step, but when you are ready for change, it can be an enjoyable process, even when it is hard work or explores painful issues. We can work together to determine the best way to achieve your goals in a warm, compassionate and non-judgmental environment.

Taking the first step towards change is a challenge on its own but I believe that it does not have to be a lonely or a daunting process. Through my work with children, adolescents, adults, families, and parents in a variety of settings ranging from partial hospitalization/intensive outpatient, outpatient, and therapeutic supervised visitation, I have learned that simply a small desire for something different can be the catalyst for a profound transformation.

Families are a good source of strength but they can also get stuck in unproductive patterns of behavior and interaction which are challenging to change. I help families break these difficult cycles by working with them to identify goals and establish plans and milestones to achieve them. I apply over 25 years of experience as I empower struggling individuals, couples, and families facing marital issues, divorce, anxiety, depression, and children/adolescents with self-destructive behaviors or ADD/ADHD as well as many other mental health issues. You're looking for a therapist and want to be sure it will be the right thing to do. Talking to the right therapist can be very rewarding. To make the most of your life you have to decrease the things that hold you back; depression, anxiety, conflict and stress. My style is very interactive. We will focus on your strengths and deal with solutions you can use. The goal is to help you feel better and back on track quickly and effectively. When you clear away obstacles and learn to use the right tools great things are possible .

Taking the first step of looking for a therapist is a major accomplishment, but can also leave people with many questions. Is this person going to be a good fit for me? What can I expect from therapy? As your therapist, it is my job to ease this process for you by creating a non-judgmental and empathetic space for you. Many of the children and adults I work with identify that they have challenges communicating with others, feel misunderstood, experience periods of self-doubt, and want to develop a stronger sense of connectedness to their family and friends. When people begin to work with me, I want them to feel safe and validated.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
