Parenting is one of life's greatest adventures. Amid the numerous books, experts, and voices out there it can be difficult to determine what to do when faced with a challenge. Parents of spirited, high-energy, rigid, anxious, or disruptive children or of those who carry diagnoses may feel alone with their challenges. As your psychologist, I offer empathy, support and a collaborative approach for fostering goodness-of-fit parenting in your family. That is, I help you to discover the most effective ways for you to parent your unique child.

I can help you through issues including anxiety, depression, food allergy (FA) anxiety and management (for FA individuals and/or caregivers), school issues (including 504 plans and IEPs), parenting challenges, and more.
Making the first phone call to a therapist can sometimes be a difficult task. Our minds are often full of "what ifs" that can prevent us from taking that first step in seeking help. "What if I've never seen a therapist before?" "What if I don't know how to act in a session?" "What if I've had bad experiences with therapists in the past and am worried this time will be the same?" "What if I 'fail' at therapy?" But...what if our minds turned those "what ifs" into questions such as "What if this time I'm with the right therapist?" "What if I'm able to find solutions to help me feel better?" "What if I can make changes that last?"

My focus is with adults who are triggered by relationship issues. These issues may range from a caregiver being overwhelmed by demands of an aging parent , siblings who are resisting being in relationship, spouses who feel unavailable or children who seem distant. I believe nothing matters more in life than our relationships. Sometimes, we need someone else to point out the better alternatives so we can take the next right step. I'm highly skilled in helping clients strengthen their communication and coping skills while healing old wounds. Once clear objectives are established, improvement can start immediately.

Every day you feel the pressure to be perfect. You wake up, scroll through your social media, and are left feeling inadequate; like something is wrong with you or you don't "have it all together" the way it seems that others do. This feeling could be connected to your that way you view your body, your parenting , your work, your relationships; and the list goes on. You have dreams and goals, and continue to work hard and do your best, but still, it feels like you aren't getting anywhere and you aren't feeling any better about yourself or your life.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
