Navigating life can be challenging, especially when we are dealing with emotional pain, relationship problems or addiction. At times the assistance of a therapist is needed to help regain stability. Each individual has the ability to make healthy changes to address areas they find of concern. Dealing with these life challenges on your own can be very difficult. Therapy seeks to assist us in recapturing the experience and feelings of pleasure, freedom, connection, and choice. You may believe you have tried everything, perhaps you have lost hope or don't know where to get the help you need.

You typically seek out therapy when feeling confusion, despair, loss, conflict, or other negative thoughts and emotions. I see my job as a facilitator. I set a slow and steady agenda where you can do the work to become less confused, better aware, and more comfortable to face the issues with which you struggle. Life (good and bad) continues once our hour session is done. My goal is that you can learn to manage life when not with me in session.

Imagine what life would be like if you stopped apologizing, stopped trying to fix everything for everyone and instead started putting yourself first. Would you be happier? Feel more like the person you're meant to be? Would you make different decisions that benefitted YOU? Or finally just get some sleep at night? I get it! When you're the one putting everyone else first, you feel run down, cranky and resentful. The idea of saying "NO" is terrifying but exciting. But hey - it's not our job to do a delicate dance to keep everyone happy. You are not selfish for putting yourself first.

Maybe you struggle with depression, anxiety, feelings of unhappiness or unfulfillment. Sometimes life’s adversities take the best of us, and leave us lost, feeling numb or trapped in a cycle of self sabotaging behaviors that perpetuate our suffering. Whether it is the sudden rupture of a relationship, abuse, a traumatic loss, a divorce, abandonment, or work related stressors, I view these experiences as opportunities to grow into a better version of the self. I commend you for being brave and contemplating the thought of a better present, leaving past hurt behind, and embracing healing with therapy.

Personal, confidential and interactive describe the way I practice psychology. Gently helping people unlock their prisons of addiction, anxiety and depression, I enjoy seeing them achieve their dreams. I believe body, mind and spirit have to be in balance, and that each person, although unique, is embedded in and influenced by family and culture. I practice tailoring psychotherapy to the needs of the individual. One size does not fit all.

I now specialize in working with emerging adulthood, anxiety, depression, family dynamics, divorced families, substance use/abuse, and Asperger’s Syndrome.
I am dually licensed as an LPC and LCADC. The path I took to become a therapist was a long and winding one which provided me with a rich diversity of experience to draw from in my work. I understand that change is difficult. I received a degree in Creative Writing from the University of Montana in Missoula, where I also began my study of Zen, and eventually spent over 20 years as an Information Technology professional. I have been married for over 30 years and, together with my wife, have raised two sons who are now young adults.

I also believe that when we’re in the throes of depression, anxiety, substance use, or some other condition, we get taken away from the realization of our true self.
In a first meeting with a client, one of the most important parts of the session is to understand not only what brings a person into the office, “the problem” so to speak, but also to build out a framework of what the client believes will be the solution. What will it look like when things are better? Rather than pathologizing, I prefer to focus within the wellness model of counseling, identifying strengths and resources available to contribute toward a person’s personal counseling goals.

I am dual licensed in both mental health and substance use treatment.
Welcome. As each one of us can be faced with challenges, loss, adversity, and transition, sometimes we need a little extra support during those times. Therapy can be a safe space to explore problems, navigate new situations, learn additional coping skills, and understand where you may be stuck on an issue. As a therapist, I provide an open, safe, and non-judgmental space where clients can freely explore their issues and emotions. I use different therapeutic techniques to best match what may be useful for my clients and their specific needs.

My experience working in agency settings treating co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders provided opportunities to also work with families as they recover from unhealthy dynamics that can form when a loved one lives with substance dependency.
Facing life's challenges takes courage and while there is always a path toward change, we sometimes need support along the way. Counseling can help increase self-awareness leading to healthier choices, effective coping skills and improved communication, elevating overall wellness and life satisfaction. Learning to manage anxiety and depression, coping with grief or trauma, family relationship conflict and recovery from substance abuse are common problems I work on with clients. Together, we can navigate what often seems overwhelming when faced alone.

My ideal client is someone who acknowledges their struggles and seeks a path toward healing and wholeness. They may be grappling with substance use disorders or wrestling with mental health challenges, perhaps even both. They yearn for understanding, support, and practical tools to navigate life's complexities. Their goals may include breaking free from the grip of addiction, improve their mental health, to untangle the knots of trauma, and to foster healthier relationships with themselves and their loved ones. They seek peace of mind, fulfillment, and the freedom to live authentically. What they want, above all, is hope.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
