I tend to see individuals who achieve success in school and in their careers, but retain a chronic and deep-seated feeling that something is missing. Often, these individuals have gotten by on exceptional logic with little sense that there can be more to their existence. They may be more comfortable doing as opposed to being, thinking as opposed to feeling, and helping as opposed to being helped. High standards commonly include high pressure to self-contain, which can cause immense, private suffering. I aim to provide these individuals with a fuller and more compassionate experience of themselves.
My specialty is in treating self-containment issues (e.g. skin picking, nail biting, hair pulling, binge eating, stealing and sex addictions). Individual and group therapies will offer strategies for managing impulse behaviors, and even more importantly, provide a forum for learning healthy dependence and relationships to self and others.
Therapy will work on recognizing needs, losses, and worth, beyond measured success. It will foster an appreciation of the complexity of our inner and outer lives. My primary orientation is psychodynamic, with discrete behavioral tools introduced as appropriate.
