The perinatal season and first responder field can be gratifying yet also introduce enormous changes in family dynamics and relationships. Whether a new parent or first responder, experiencing tragedy personally and or secondarily, expectations for a new mother or first responder can be high and too often dismissive of the unique stressors involved with making a new human or in the field. When unpredicted changes happen, people can feel alone, isolated, and afraid to give voice to their vulnerabilities. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with extensive experience in working with the perinatal and first responder population.

As a therapist, my practice focuses on mindfully helping people find and create purposeful pathways towards healing. I use well-known methods like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and I mix them with a layered and nuanced appreciation for the human endeavor. In life, we often absorb and integrate difficult experiences, which in turn can lead to great suffering. I will work to empower you to write your own story with fresh ink sourced from new understandings.

I can see any client in Maine and NH via teletherapy but I am not credentialed with insurance companies in Maine, only NH. I help guide my clients to understand how their upbringing, worldview, culture, personality, and view of self affect how they are feeling, behaving, and thinking currently. One goal of mine is to help my clients maximize their wellbeing by better understanding themselves through the use of coping tools like mindfulness to slow and calm themselves enough to be able to assess their own thoughts and emotions in the moment so as to minimize regrets while reducing mood and behavioral symptoms.

My ideal clients are individuals who are curious, open-minded, and willing to reflect honestly on themselves. I work well with people who can consider different perspectives, tolerate respectful challenge, and examine assumptions without feeling judged—even if they judge themselves. I can help soften that self-judgment, encourage development of appreciation of the little things and their motivation. Common goals include building self-esteem, managing stress, reclaiming personal power, and understanding how past experiences shape present choices. If you value insight and practical tools for change, we may be a good fit.

Everyone has a story to tell, a thread that consciously or unconsciously guides his or her behavior, wants, and motivations. In my practice, I try to help people who have become unhappy with their current pattern of living and have begun to think about building a clearer understanding of who they are and who they feel they would like to "be." I work to build a mutual appreciation for each other's story. Having received extensive training in Cognitive Behavioral and Analytical Theory, I am able to provide an eclectic approach to working with a wide variety of clients' needs.

Personality Disorders Therapists
What are the common treatment options for personality disorders?
Personality disorders are typically treated with psychotherapy, sometimes in conjunction with medication. Therapy can help people with personality disorders develop skills to tolerate difficult emotions, navigate interpersonal relationships, and solidify their sense of self. Medications can treat symptoms that co-occur with the disorder, such as depression, anger, aggression, and impulsivity.

When to seek treatment for personality disorders?
Even though treatment for personality disorders can be an uphill battle, it’s best to seek help if you suspect that you or a loved one is struggling with one, because personality disorders can create substantial problems in life. Symptoms depend on the specific disorder, but overall signs of personality disorders include consistent difficulty maintaining close relationships, dramatic variations in self-esteem, and an unstable sense of identity.

How long does therapy take for personality disorders?
The timeline for treating personality disorders isn’t as clear-cut as it is for other disorders. Change can be difficult, taking from around one year to five, 10, or more. The key is finding a therapist who has extensive experience treating the relevant disorder. For example, a psychologist who specializes in narcissistic personality disorder has specific communication strategies that allow them to sustain the relationship and be more effective with narcissistic patients.

Can therapy help people with personality disorders?
Research suggests that for those who are motivated to address concerns or interpersonal conflict related to a personality disorder, therapy is far more effective than no treatment, and that most people in therapy see improvements. However, since personality disorders involve entrenched elements of identity, they are less responsive to treatment than are other mental health conditions. Finding an expert who has extensive experience working with a given personality disorder is one factor that increases the likelihood of successful treatment.
