The perinatal season and first responder field can be gratifying yet also introduce enormous changes in family dynamics and relationships. Whether a new parent or first responder, experiencing tragedy personally and or secondarily, expectations for a new mother or first responder can be high and too often dismissive of the unique stressors involved with making a new human or in the field. When unpredicted changes happen, people can feel alone, isolated, and afraid to give voice to their vulnerabilities. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with extensive experience in working with the perinatal and first responder population.

You hold it all together for everyone else, but inside you're exhausted. Maybe you're the caregiver, the helper, the responsible one. You find yourself anxious, overwhelmed, disconnected from your body, or wondering why life feels so hard even though you're doing everything "right." You may be carrying the effects of chronic stress, past experiences, people-pleasing, or years of putting your own needs last. Whether you're navigating anxiety, chronic stress, relationship challenges, or the long-term effects of past experiences, this work is about helping you return to yourself.
Therapy can be a place to finally put some of that down.

I am Meghan McHaney, an LCSW in IL, and an LICSW in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. I specialize in treating PTSD, but love working with a variety of people! Once I earned my clinical license, therapy became my passion. I became obsessed with how people heal. I read everything I could about what helps and what doesn’t. My goal of providing the most up to date, effective treatment led me to seek further education, certifications, and mentorship from trauma experts.

You don’t have to do this alone anymore.
You may understand your patterns and have spent years trying to make sense of your inner world, yet still find yourself caught in anxiety, emotional reactivity, relational pain, or a quiet sense of overwhelm. Many people I work with are thoughtful, capable, and moving through life with great responsibility, while internally carrying the imprint of chronic stress, trauma, or attachment wounds.
Together, we create space to slow down, a place where you don’t have to perform, where all parts of you are welcome, and where change is allowed to unfold naturally, at a pace your system can trust.

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.
When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.
What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.
Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
