She also has extensive experience providing individual therapy to children, adolescents, and young adults struggling with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, and sleep issues.
Dr. Stoop approaches therapy from the understanding that all behaviors and emotions serve a purpose. When we can identify that purpose, as well as how those behaviors and emotions interact with each other and those around us, we can begin to understand how to approach change. She aims to provide clients with space and acceptance of all emotions while working towards learning to cope with, manage, and sometimes change what is unhelpful or harmful in these dynamics. She utilizes a flexible approach that draws from a variety of evidence-based therapeutic techniques to tailor treatment to each person to meet their specific goals.

Use of coping skills and self-regulation techniques as well as cognitive behavioral therapy work so well for adolescents and some adults.
I work with a variety of clients who are struggling with life challenges and mental health concerns. Examples include anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, PTSD and more. It is also an honor for me to be able to process trauma with individuals using various techniques to heal some of those wounds you have had recently or perhaps all your life, especially veterans. Similarly, the journey of grief is different for everyone so walking with people or families through grief is a strength of mine. I am familiar with learning differences, standardized testing, and other school issues are also challenges I am ready to help you face.

I'm an adolescent and young adult therapist who teaches my clients skills to help them feel better in the moment, while also guiding them on a path of long-term healing.
When a person's usual ability to cope is overwhelmed, a trauma response can be triggered- I help my clients overcome the emotional and behavioral struggles that may follow. By building a safe and productive space for us to work within, I help my clients build a positive and resilient sense of self and belonging.

Many couples come to therapy feeling stuck in painful cycles of conflict or growing distance. I help partners slow these cycles so both people can feel heard and understand what’s happening between them. It’s common for one partner to feel more ready than the other. My role is not to take sides, but to help both understand the pattern between them. I also work with individuals navigating anxiety, relationship challenges, life transitions, grief, trauma and questions about direction or meaning. Together, we look beneath the surface and find a clearer way forward that feels manageable and grounded.

FAQ - Teenage and Adolescent Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
