Attachment-based Therapists in Stratham, NH

I believe that one of the most important things a therapist can do is offer a place where people feel accepted for exactly who they are. When people feel accepted they are more comfortable sharing their stories, working towards change, and accepting themselves. With the support of a therapist, it is possible to gain a better understanding of one’s self, improve relationships, effectively manage stress, see things from a different perspective, and replace what is not working with what might work better. Please visit my website at www.birchhavennh.com for more information.

Aj Diamonti
Psychologist, MA, PhD
1 Endorsed
Stratham, NH 03885
Working formerly as a teacher, and as a psychologist, has allowed Dr. Diamonti to collaborate with people as they learn new ways of managing the challenges of life and discover ways to develop better relationships with themselves and others. This has affirmed a belief in the strength, courage and resilience each individual possesses. He believes it is important to build a non-judgmental space with his clients that acknowledges that they are the experts on their own experience, where they can feel accepted for who they are even as they are working towards change.

My work is trauma-informed, attachment-based & insight oriented.
Psychological suffering exists on different levels and manifests in different ways, in psyche, body, interpersonally, socially, both consciously and unconsciously. There are many ways to address psychological struggle, exploration of dynamics underlying "symptoms" to the exploration of ways that we are alienated from partners & community. This is especially helpful when the source of suffering is unclear. My work is relational. I understand how relationships and systems impact our lives. Facilitating empowerment is key. I have expertise in working with queer adolescents/emerging adults, with their families and social surround.

Many of us are trying to manage depressive feelings, anxious thoughts, and relationship issues. Many of us long for more connection with the important people in our lives. Sadly, like a frustrating circle, lack of connection with others frequently leads to increased depression and anxiety, which in turn increases your sense of isolation. Bringing awareness and understanding to the emotions underneath your communication with others, as well as learning how to verbalize these emotions so others better understand your experience, can be helpful in decreasing these distressing symptoms.

If you are here, it’s likely because you are in some state of struggle. You may be considering therapy for the first time and are uncertain what to expect or you may be returning to therapy with a different purpose or goal. In either case, it’s not uncommon to feel overwhelmed, uncomfortable, stuck or even defeated. However distressing your struggle may be, I suspect there is also a sense of hope… a feeling or wish that things could be better. That is where our work begins.

Attachment-based Therapists
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
