Sometimes feelings of anxiety or depression , problems with relationships, challenges at work, or other social difficulties are hard to understand and resolve without help.
I believe that when people feel understood, they have the best opportunity to successfully address life's challenges. Finding a therapist with whom you can talk honestly--one who can help you find the words to explain your feelings--can be life-changing. Creating a trusted relationship with a therapist can be the first step in developing the tools to live a life that feels richer and more authentic.

I have been a practicing psychotherapist in Portsmouth for 25 years, specializing in depression , anxiety, and relationship issues. I have also successfully helped clients struggling with trauma, OCD, anger management, prolonged grief, parenting issues, and Bi-polar Disorder. I emphasize a collaborative effort with clients and believe therapy is only successful when there is a positive relationship between the client and the clinician. I have worked with numerous clients who have needed medication at some point in their treatment. I do not rush to recommend medication, but I do work closely PCP's or psychiatrists if medication is necessary.

Depression , anxiety, anger, ADHD may all have symptoms of executive dysfunction; they can be seen as both emotional and neurocognitive disorders first seen in childhood or adulthood.
Psychotherapy can create a unique and healing relationship. Psychotherapy supports personal growth and emotional strength; it helps people solve problems and it builds motivation to get life-work done. I meet each person at their unique place on life's journey to discover how they want to grow. My specialty is psychotherapy with young, middle-age and older adults. I work with problems and disorders such as loneliness, depression , bipolar, anxiety, insomnia, eating issues. I have skills working with people who have emotional problems and relationship conflict. A trusting relationship with a psychologist can help you meet goals.

Sometimes in life we question where we are going or cannot seem to find a path to get to where we want to be ~ to be happy with ourselves and at peace. The world today may be creating more stressors in our life than what we are use to causing a feeling of imbalance, depression or anxiety. My goal is to create a safe, respectful and caring atmosphere where one may explore and begin to understand one's thoughts, behaviors and feelings. Together with my clients, we explore their dreams, challenges and fears. Along this journey there can be self-discovery, problem solving and self love.

The tools of trauma treatment are highly effective for depression , anxiety, relationship issues, or feeling stuck.
Most of us want the same thing. We want to feel reasonably happy and at peace on a daily basis. Content. It is our individual paths and our own often complicated personal histories that make happiness so uniquely difficult to achieve, sometimes. It is the creative work of therapy to support a person's capacity to access the very best part of her or himself. Once this occurs, people, essentially, heal themselves.

Depression Therapists
Depressive disorders are characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and worthlessness and a lack of desire to engage in formerly pleasurable activities. Depression is not a passing blue mood, which almost everyone experiences from time to time, but a complex mind/body illness that interferes with everyday functioning. It not only darkens one's outlook, it is commonly marked by sleep problems and changes in energy levels and appetite. It alters the structure and function of nerve cells so that it disrupts the way the brain processes information and interprets experience.

Despite feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, depression is a treatable condition. It can be treated with psychotherapy. As with many illnesses, the earlier treatment begins, the more effective it can be and the greater the likelihood that recurrence can be prevented.

Psychotherapy addresses the thinking patterns that precipitate depression, and studies show that it prevents recurrence. Drug therapy is often helpful in relieving symptoms, such as severe anxiety, so that people can engage in meaningful psychotherapy.
