Significant loss, sadness or anxiety can impact our functioning at any point in our lives. A good therapeutic relationship can offer support and clarity. Emotions can seem overwhelming, but having a safe place to process them can be life-changing. Holding emotions alone can create an internal experience of overwhelm, but a connection with a therapist can lessen the feelings of isolation, anxiety , depression and/or stress.

Life is not always an easy road to navigate and sometimes we need a guide to help us find our way again. In my work I enjoy helping my clients heal the blocks to the true authentic Self. Our fears , wounds, self-criticisms and identity issues are not who we are, but we must resolve them before we can live the life that is waiting to be ours.

I work best with individuals who prefer a therapist to be interactive and collaborative. I strive to support you emotionally and challenge you to experiment with new ways of thinking and behaving which increase happiness and life satisfaction. The nature of your presenting problem can vary from a recent disruption in a significant relationship to life-long difficulties with anxiety , depression, mood swings or childhood trauma. All these problems can be helped with self understanding and acceptance along with specific behavioral interventions to ease your pain and suffering.

I went to the woods...to learn what it had to teach. Thoreau knew that nature is our own healer. But quiet, like a "solitary loon," is often elusive; a quiet mind, a quiet moment, can often feel impossible. I work from a narrative, nature-based approach, CBT in style, but collaborative with you. Outside of anxiety , away from continued sadness or looping thoughts that keep you stuck in non-movement. Let me help you find forward motion, exploring pathways to well-being. I love working with folks in transition, young adults, and women who are wanting to explore deeper ways to find meaning in the world.

I have been a practicing psychotherapist in Portsmouth for 25 years, specializing in depression, anxiety , and relationship issues. I have also successfully helped clients struggling with trauma, OCD, anger management, prolonged grief, parenting issues, and Bi-polar Disorder. I emphasize a collaborative effort with clients and believe therapy is only successful when there is a positive relationship between the client and the clinician. I have worked with numerous clients who have needed medication at some point in their treatment. I do not rush to recommend medication, but I do work closely PCP's or psychiatrists if medication is necessary.

Sometimes in life we question where we are going or cannot seem to find a path to get to where we want to be ~ to be happy with ourselves and at peace. The world today may be creating more stressors in our life than what we are use to causing a feeling of imbalance, depression or anxiety . My goal is to create a safe, respectful and caring atmosphere where one may explore and begin to understand one's thoughts, behaviors and feelings. Together with my clients, we explore their dreams, challenges and fears . Along this journey there can be self-discovery, problem solving and self love.

Sometimes feelings of anxiety or depression, problems with relationships, challenges at work, or other social difficulties are hard to understand and resolve without help.
I believe that when people feel understood, they have the best opportunity to successfully address life's challenges. Finding a therapist with whom you can talk honestly--one who can help you find the words to explain your feelings--can be life-changing. Creating a trusted relationship with a therapist can be the first step in developing the tools to live a life that feels richer and more authentic.

I see clients of all ages with a variety of needs, my current practice is approximately 50/50 with adults and children who are struggling with anxiety , issues of adjustment, general emotional discomfort, and children with behavioral concerns. In my practice with children, I work closely with parents. I work to develop a comfortable rapport focusing on strengths and supports available to your child. I begin the process by meeting with both parents so that I may learn about your child through your eyes and better understand how the concerns are impacting your child.

I love my work and am in awe of the adults and adolescents I work with who courageously address the hurts in their life that prevent them from living more fully. It maybe a crisis in a relationship, ongoing anxiety or depression, a painful trauma, or an inner sense that things are just not right. Together we pay attention to these feelings, enabling them to be talked about, more fully experienced and then understood. This transformative process can restore joy and resilience in life, as well as improve the capacity to care about oneself and be in relationship with others.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
