I view every client I work with through a mind-body-spirit perspective, and as unique individuals who are the experts on their own lives. Whether or not we lose our way, or lose our sense of self, there is a deep wisdom within us that remembers who we are, and that will guide us through what sometimes feels impossible. You can expect me to treat you with warmth, transparency, and compassion; to use skill, intuition, and evidence-based practices; and to keep your need for emotional safety forefront in my mind, as we embark on your healing journey, together. Note: I am not accepting clients at this time.

I offer compassionate and confidential psychotherapy to adults. I believe that the aim of psychotherapy is to slow down and reflect on your feelings, on your relationships and on the patterns in your life that are stuck. Psychotherapy is beneficial to manifest who you would like to become and to live more authentically. Inherently, psychotherapy is concerned with relieving suffering, developing a deeper understanding of yourself, increasing self-acceptance and creating your individual path in life.

My areas of interest are trauma, complex trauma, sexual assault / abuse, feminist issues, supporting the queer and trans community and the creative, artistic and offbeat.
EMDR is my primary modality, but the most powerful tool we have is the safety & connection of the therapeutic relationship, providing corrective experiences in the therapy office. This heals. I've supported people in various capacities for 18+ years, including community mental health and supporting families as a birth doula.

All of us have moments in our lives where we feel stuck. Maybe life has become completely overwhelming and you find yourself unable to power through like you have in the past. Or maybe you're finally in a place where you're ready to explore the parts of your story that have always been just under the surface. Maybe you're a person of color that's never found the right words for your experiences and you find yourself drained from all the information in the media. Therapy is a space designed for you to not only address the issues you're facing right now but carefully examine what's led to this moment.

Bessel van der Kolk once wrote that “trauma is not just an event that took place sometime in the past; it is also the imprint left by that experience on the mind, brain, and body. This imprint has ongoing consequences for how the human organism manages to survive in the present.” I have come to have enormous respect for the wide range of defense mechanisms each of us creates to help us survive trauma and problematic fits with our environment. I enjoy helping others to understand and cultivate compassion towards these parts of ourselves and to build new, more adaptive ways of coping and ultimately thriving.

Anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, unhealthy relationships-these are the situations in life that may lead us to forget how strong, resilient, courageous and joyful we can be. Still, people also have an amazing power to heal, rebuild, and pick themselves up from negative circumstances and fully experience a better life. I see therapy as a journey toward viewing life from the perspective of our wisest, most compassionate and capable selves.

You may find yourself stuck in patterns you can’t seem to break—whether it’s substance use, sex, pornography, food, or cycles of anxiety, overthinking, and avoidance. Even when things look stable on the outside, these patterns can leave you feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or out of control. I work with individuals and couples to understand what’s driving these experiences, including relationship anxiety, and how to create lasting change.

If you’re feeling uncertain about whether to start therapy, you’re welcome here. So much of my work with clients is focused on getting to know the parts of us which have protected us for so long and who are understandably resistant to change. My work is based on the belief that people are generally doing the best they can with the knowledge and resources that they have. It’s important to me to honor the ways that even our “worst” coping skills have served us during painful times. I want to understand where you are in the present and learn more about what your goals are for the future.

Life can be hard and messy, especially modern life. Therapy is an opportunity to pause, seek clarity on where we're stuck or what we're going through, and find a way forward. As a psychologist with 14 years of experience providing individual therapy, I’m particularly interested in how our past shapes our present-day patterns of thinking, feeling, and reacting and in experimenting with new, more helpful ways of relating to our self and our world. I feel I'm especially attuned to working with anxiety, shame, complex trauma, chronic worrying or "overthinking", grief, and challenges related to identity and relationships.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
