I enjoy working with clients who are motivated to change, and if you're not there yet, we can work on your motivation. Whether it's an alcohol or other drug problem. or difficulties with emotions/moods, trauma, stress management, or interpersonal/relationship problems, there is almost nothing within you now that you can't change or improve if you really want to do it. I find it rewarding to work with clients who understand that change requires some work and they are willing to do that work.

Individuals and couples who seek my assistance encounter various challenges in their personal and professional lives, including relationship connection, self-imposed stress, work dissatisfaction, and the acceptance of loss or multiple losses. They value a cognitive or thinking approach to addressing these challenges and appreciate acquiring skills that can help them manage distress and conflict. It is common for individuals who have sought treatment for anxiety or depression to encounter similar challenges in their daily lives, and these issues may either persist or manifest in their work environment.

Couples are often exhausted by the same arguments, broken trust, emotional distance, or repeated automatic or addictive behavior patterns. In a commited relationship, behaviors are often more influenced by our partners than we like to admit. Many are trying to avoid the disruption of rehab or more time consuming treatment programs, while still receiving adequate support. Without shame and blame, couples can learn the emotional and behavioral patterns driving conflict, rebuild trust and communication, and create healthier routines, boundaries, and environments that support lasting change and decrease addictive behaviors.

My overarching goal in my work with individual clients is to foster their sense of self-worth. Most of the individuals I have worked with throughout my career have had their sense of self damaged by others. As a result, such individuals typically feel they are failures, unlovable, etc., despite intellectual evidence of success to the contrary. When I can help people have a greater level of access to their emotional life without self-deprecation, change begins to happen.

I provide psychological testing, evaluation, and psychotherapy services for children, teens, adults and older adults. This can range from any number of difficulties across the lifespan. Frequently we'll work to help individuals and families get diagnostic clarity (ADHD, learning disability, cognitive decline, etc), what supports or treatment approaches can help them move forward (ie if a change in therapy approach/modality with their individual therapist would be beneficial or not), or whether or not additional services or care are needed (school supports, capacity to make medical decisions, etc).

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
